Piston notching tool

Hey guys my car is getting her brand new paintjob right now and will be back in a month.(Thats why i don't have the exhaust vids up yet, 65straight six I haven't forgotted) Once i pay all that off in a month i can get back to saving for the afrs, but I need to notch my pistons for that. Now i don't want to pay and have a machine shop yank my engine and go through all that hassle if this tool really does exist. If you guys can point me in the right direction in acquiring this tool and any previous experiences will be greatly appreciated. If it needs to be taken to a machine shop, does the engine have to come out?? And how much on average does it cost to have them notched? Thanks in advance guys.

Well, Isky Cams has the tool. I have heard a way described to notch without pulling the engine, but I don't remember enough to say how it went. Maybe there is some help on the Isky website.

Your rotating assembly would not be ballanced after doing this.

Thats strange, I have had pistons flycut and put back into a block without having to be rebalanced.

This is just an observation but you can not remove EXACTLY the same weight of materal from each pistion. It may or may not be an issue. If you take too much from this pistion and not enough from another you will run the risk of vibration.

From the orig. post I read that notching was to be done with the pistons in the eng. If they are removed and the weight matched then reinstalled there should be no/minimal issues.

I am not saying that it can not be done. Iam just saying that I would not do it. The correct way would be to disassemble the engine, notch the pistons and have the crank, rods, pistons, rings & bearings rebalanced. A friend of mine is building a 393 stroker and he just had his balanced and it only cost $185. So for the cost of a gasket set, rings, rod & crank bearings + ~$200 you cound have a perfectly balanced engine.

They need to have a jig of some sort, kind of like a dovetail jig when making drawers so that only a specific amount of material can be cut out.
