So I got the two bolts removed from the starter. But the damn thing is stuck on there and will not come off. I tried to hit it with a rubber mallet and extension, but it is not budging. I tried to pushing and pull, but it is stuck on there. What is the trick?

I think there's a third up on top that is hard to see and get to. I've never changed one, so I'm not absolutely positive.

hmmm...the online service manual I have shows two only. Anyone know where the third one could be? I could not feel it. What a PITA just getting the two off, I had to use a 3' extension and slide it through the control arm and ratchet it all the way through by the radiator.

Welcome to the world of modulars! I seem to recall there being 3 bolts on the 93 Lincoln I worked on a while ago with the DOHC. There was a bolt hidden up and behind the solenoid, that was the worst to get at. I'll see if I can come up with some pictures somewhere.

Sorry about the size of the image; I run a 1280x1024 resolution. I really like how the procedure even calls the one bolt the 'concealed' one. Even they know it's damn near impossible to get to.

well you got to get the thrid bolt out.. it is a MF'ing PITA desinged by a Fing C sucker.

I get the top bolt by using a LONG extension and going thru the k member all the way up front near the where the sway bar bolts up.

my car now has the 2 bolts in the starter and one empty hole mod. I put all three in customer cars but on my own I use 2, because the thrid one causes more problems when you are trying to swap starters, now I don;t have to worry about that bolt.

...I can take it. I think.

Mine had three...Take a flashlight and look between the motor mount and engine from the k-member and you will see it...That is also the best way to get to it with extentions and swivels. It's good to have a second person line the socket onto the bolt too.

I have an 02 and it has 3 bolts...

The top one if the MF-er. I believe we had to get it from the front of the car with an air gun. It was very hard to get to and vVVVVEEERRRRRRYYYY tight. My starter is now held in by only two bolts and works fine. I threw that stupid extra one in the trash
