On my way home from school yesterday I saw steam coming out of my hood. My intake manifold was leaking coolent. I just got back from the mechanic and they told me its a common problem. I only have 45,000 miles on my car! He said its going to be $600 for the re-designed manifold and about 5 hours of labor. What should I do? Im a full time college kid that has no money...

PLEASE HELP

GEFracing has 99 and newer manifolds for 150 and a few other items , get the 98 model gaskets for your car and some silicone , do a search on here for PI and NPI and you should find some instructions on how to install this yourself , its not that hard , and you will have a bit more power in the upper RPMS by using the newer intake

5 hours of labor my ass. You can do the swap in 3 hours blind folded.
Do the search for a PI intake swap it is worth around 10 hp and is fairly straight forward.

I thought ford had a recall on this? I have a friend that works in a ford shop and he says he's done quite a few intake swaps with this problem. Apparently, they were all done for free??

No the recall did not cover 98 only 96-97. Mine cracked at 60k miles. Got the intake shipped for $75 and did the swap in under 3 hours,w/ my dad helping. I agree w/ that other guy that said to buy the 99 up pi intake! Mid as well gain some power from the swap!

Ahh, good call. I knew some were fixed for free, but I wasn't aware the 98's weren't covered.

I am having the same problem as we speak...warranty helps, but they tacked 200 dollars worth of things warranty doesn't cover. Dealers always tryin to make a buck.

If you have the dealer do it they won't install a PI intake on your car. Mine cracked to and I just bought an 03 PI intake with the aluminum crossover (don't want this to happen again) for $120 shipped, so it's definately worth it, plus I'll be adding to the HP numbers which is always a plus

Where did you buy your pi intake manifold from? Did you have to buy anything else? I just got off the phone with ford and they told me it would be $450-$500 for everything... Why did the other mechanic say $583 for the part and $350 for labor? hmm....

I bought it in the classifieds. All you need it the PI intake, RTV, the coolant hose that runs through the v in the block, and the NPI intake gaskets. And I'm installing it myself. All in all I'm only going to spend at the very VERY most $200.

Sorry you have this common problem and if I read correctly along with 98_GT_Vert they want to way overcharge you. Ford NEEDS to step up and fix a known defect in their product whether under warranty or not. The so-called extended coverage on 96/97s only, needs to be upgraded to a full recall including later years that don't have the aluminum crossover IMO. A large part of why I'm changing out my stock POS full plastic ones, is I don't want to get stuck out in the middle of nowhere with my son and a large repair bill. This is just the kind of thing that turns long time Ford customer to go to Honda/Acura.

I had this exact same problem with mine and I bought a PI intake with the aluminum crossover, and it made a good power increase..But to follow three months later I blew my motor, so I bought a complete forged longblock, so im trying to sell my old parts...I have the intake for sale in the forums but no good bites....Ill sell it 130 shipped....Email me at Yabba75@aol.com
