Please help me. 97 Cobra dying right away.

I am at a lost as to what is causing this. I have a 97 Cobra that dies as soon as you start it after it rev's to life once. Even if you give it gas as you start it, it dies . I've replaced the TPS. This problem doesn't happen all the time but seems to be getting worse. Today I replaced the IAC valve and it started up fine and ran better than it has in a long time. The only modifications are a BBK CAI and flowmaster exhaust. Can anyone shed some light on what may be causing this??? Thank you

Let me add that after replacing the Iac valve and driving it once for 30 min it is doing the dying thing again now. No vacuum leaks I can see or notice. Thanks.

check fuel filter and make sure you dont have a bad pump

Does the theft light flash when this happens? Or stay onj?

I had this problem on a different car, maybe check your MAF. Good Luck

sounds like the mass air flow sensor to me > try taking it off the car and use Electrical cleaner to very gently clean the probe's also double check to make sure all the vaccum lines are hooked to the intake tube and intake like there suppost to be

No theft light comes on. I'll try cleaning the MAF and double check the vacuum lines. Where is the relay for the fuel pump located?
Once in awhile I'll get the check engine light and it shows the back O2 sensor on the right side is having a problem with something like low voltage. I wouldn't think this would cause my problem. I have an x-pipe but I can't get the damn bolt on the right side to break off of the stock exhaust .

The fuel pump relay is part of the CCRM

Ok, so I cleaned the MAF and it still keeps dying right away. When it finally does start it runs fine. So far, I've cleaned the MAF, and replaced the IAC and TPS. I'm at a lost as to what's causing this. Somebody has had to have this problem before I would think. In the past I had a bad voltage code for one of the O2 sensors which caused the MIL once in awhile. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks.

Chagne teh fuel filter. If it keeps happening check the fuel pump. check the voltage going to it. i had a problem with the rear collision sensor on mine that shuts off the fuel pump in an accident....was dropping my voltage to the pump.
Try all that then report back.

Had the exact same prob on my foxbody. Spent a fortune replacing everything, and nothing helped. It ended up being a dirty MAF. Also try cleaning the TB. Also my crankcase ventilator (air filter to vent the crank) was a source of a vacuum leak on my car. I changed all lines but still assumed there was an issue somehwere. Thats what all solved my probs. It was the most aggravating ordeal ever. But this solved it. Hope you figure it out.

When you say a dirty MAF, do you mean the mesh screen for the MAF or the sensor itself? I cleaned the MAF screen yesterday with carb cleaner. It didn't really look very dirty to begin with. I also sprayed a little on the small electrodes inside the housing the MAF bolts to. This didn't solve it. Today the CAI looked like it had a little bit of a gap where it bolts to the MAF and it's housing like the mesh screen was not all the way in place and a little offset, so I straightened that out and it started but I still don't trust it. I guess if it starts doing it again I'll take it to my mechanic and have him put it on the diagnostic machine and hopefully that may show what is wrong. Thanks for all of your advice, guys. I'll post again when it is fixed hopefully.

Don't clean the maf with carb cleaner. YOu have to get a electronics safe cleaner to do that. If you think the maf screen is leaking, take it off and use silicone to seal it instead... again, use an electonics safe silcone to do this.

I finally found out it was the security system causing the dying right away. I got the code cleared and it has done it once since then. When it did, I moved the steering column around a bit and it fired right up. Last week I got a SCI SF3 from AM and it hasn't done anything since. By the way, the tuner really opened the car up. It's hard to keep your foot out of it.

I know this thread is almost a year old, but I've been researching the heck out of a possible fuel pump/relay issue and never read anything about the theft light.

I'm curious why you asked if the theft light comes on? Cause I noticed my theft light flashes for no reason sometimes. What does this indicate?

did you disconnect the battery when you replaced the iac valve? it makes a difference
