Ok I need to know if anyone knows the best route to ditch my 8.8 with 270k miles on it. It has a pinion and differential leak, trac-lok that is toast, and bearing play on both sides. First off doesn anyone know how to fix the pinion leak (the part with the spindle coming out of the front of the differential and connects to the driveshaft) or replace the seal? Second, does anyone know where to get a good deal on a complete unit (minus brakes if an option) or what other model and years of mustangs or whatever else would work perfectly (preferrably a new unit altogether however)? Or would it be better/cheaper to let someone qualified go run-a-muck back there?

Then there is the driveshaft, it has a balance problem and both U-joints are ready to go. So does anyone else know of anyone still selling one (preferrably the aluminum one) for the old price before the aluminum all got sucked out overseas?

3rd and lastly - the transmission. The transmission in my car is 21 years old and i'm in the market for a new. At the current moment it runs perfectly believe it or not. My problem is that the tailhousing is leaking - as a temporary fix, would ANYONE know how to fix the tailhouse to driveshaft seal back there, or is it no big deal with it leaking like a SIEVE!? Also, what type of transmissions would bolt up (tremec or ford racing) using at least the stock clutch? As additional input, which ones do you guys like for everyday use, the FRPP HD T5, Tremec 3550, or TK0s? In addition, who is a good place to deal with price and service wise for it?

Thanks in advance for any replies posted, I really would like to get this high-mileage pony back on its feet again ASAP - the more suggestions the better - thanks!!!

The pinion seal can be replaced by removing the d/s, removing the pinion bolt, removing the plate and prying the old one out and installing a new one. If the rear end needs a rebuild, might as well do it all at once. There is supposed to be a little play between the ring and pinion, but not much. The axels also have some side to side play, but no big deal. I guess if you say the trac-lock is bad that means your getting one wheel peel. I don't know what gears you are running but good time to upgrade. Ring and Pinion is about $160-180, Track loc rebuild kit is about $50, a berring and seal kit is around $100, and labor to have it all installed around $200.

You could have new U-joints installed in your stock d/s and then have it balanced. I used to say it wasn't worth it but now I would say it is because of the skyrocked price of the alumimum ds.

Don't replace it unless you have to, go to an autoparts store and order a new tail shaft seal to the tranny, that's all you need. I've never replaced one on a T5 but while the d/s is out getting fixed the seal should be able to come out easy with the right tools.

I think you need to go to a good driveline shop that specailizes in trannies, and rear ends.
