am looking at buying a 1996 covert gt the owners says it has 4:10 gears billet flywheel t-5(from 97) bbk h-pipe flo tech converters imco mufflers and pipe all 2"(i think he mis typed) king cobra clutch b&m ripper short throw. trans what built using ford racing internals professional tune up using bosch platimum plugs and ford racing wires. he says it is stock engine(285hp) which from what i have seen is wrong stock hp is 215 tq is 285. he claims with the little mods the car should be low 12's on pump gas and street tires and with race fuel and slicks mid 11"s. is there anyway this is true? maybe i am wrong but if he is right that means aprrox 185rwhp is getting a 3300+lbs car moving pretty good. just dont seem possible. they have not put it at the track yet. he is going by what the mechanic that did all the work and other combo's on other stangs to get his numbers. is this possible? thank you

maybe high 13's, and if I was him I would rip out those BOSH plugs and throw them in the trash, grab some factory motorcrafts or autolights, heard NGK is good too. He should have a T45 transmission, i believe they started putting them in starting in 1996 and ran too mid 2001.

here is the ad and the emails i have had from him

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...50313203176&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:MOTORS:1123

Hi Stevek: With the t-5 transmission; 1st,2nd, and third gears are actually taller gears than the t-45 trans found in all GT's. 4th and 5th gears are slightly shorter, maintaining better final drive ratios for highway and top speed driving. additionally the 4.10:1 gears in the rear end are significantly taller than stock (3.62:1 in our case) these gears allow the car to launch and reach top speed(acceleration) MUCH faster than stock.
Ask any racer, proper gearing is the most important factor in reaching the quickes acceleration times weather your drag racing or road course racing. In addition; the exhaust, being free flow, adds between 15 and 20 flywheel horsepower, unlike the highly restrictive system that ford installs on these cars. As I stated in the listing, this car has not been to the track but I do anticipate 1/4 mile times in the high 11 to low 12 sec times on street tires and regular fuel. with a proper set of slicks and racing fuel I would expect to see low 11's or possibly even high 10's. Try to get that out of a stock convertible GT.....lol not gonna happen ever.

hey Steve,
sorry 'bout the slow response. I hav'nt done any mods to the engine other than getting it up to par. the engine is running stock horsepower (285) but with the gearing mods the car moves into the 11-12 sec bracket. as horsepower is important for 1/4 mile times, gearing is also (I'm sure you already know this). 400 hp would easily get you into the 12's with stock gearing, correct gearing will get you even lower times with stock hp. If I was able to keep the car, the engine mods would be next. upping the hp to 350-400 would put this car into the 10's without trouble. If you look at other cars around the net you will see similar results to what I'm stating. Unfortunately, all of this is hypothetical, as the car has never been run......not even test and tune. All the specs that I've said are vague and opinion based, but I base them on reliable data from racers I know, data available on line and my own experiences with other cars. I do understand your concern COMPLETELY and hope I'm answering your questions to your satisfaction. Please ask anything you can think of......I'll be here

buy a 1999+ gt i've seen them sell for 5k and with similar amount of miles. His car cant be faster than 13 seconds at all, especially since he did no engine mods and is basing this all on gearing. Stock form the 1996 runs 15's i belie and The 1999+ models run 14.5 i believe. And they have 40-50hp more. I've seen many 99+ gt's with 300hp and gearing barly break 13's and then it all depends on the driver.

By the way that car looks in the picture i would stay away. He didnt even bother to mention to you that the engine needs a new motor mount. Look at that pic of the engine to me, it looks like its leaning to the left which is very in safe to have a motor lean... check it out in person before bidding..

11-12 seconds with gears and exhaust? I agree with the poster above - check the car out in person and test drive. No telling what else this guy is trying to pass off. That car does not appear to even have PI heads - and is probably putting out 230 flywheel HP, maybe 200 rear wheel HP. Also, beware of any sale ads that say "Warning, this car is very very very FAST". This is either a sign that the car has been abused/driven hard or that the owner is full of it. Go for a 99+ coupe, will be close in price.

No problem - pick up a 99-04 - prices are right and parts are pretty cheap. Let us know how your search goes.

The guy obviously has no clue what he is talking about...WTH is a 3.62 gear? I don't care what kind of a deal you could get on it anyone that clueless is either a complete moron or a liar and who knows what kind of a mess you are getting into. A bone stock '96 131k mile 4.6 engine in a convertible with a racing T-5 and 4.10's wouldn't run a 10 second ET if it was being dragged behind a jet car...even with the Imports Suck sticker.

Basically the gears are the only mod. Low 15's for a vert. Plus that engine is rocked WAAAAY to the right. Def a broken mount or worse.

I sent the seller a little note on his misinformed reply to your question. Maybe he will revise it.

I sent the seller some information he should "know" about NPI mustangs, and that broken motor mount. Told him if that GT touches the 13's I'll buy it
