I am in the middle of installing water temp and oil pressure gauges under the radio but when I went to pull the old aftermarket radio out it was not wired up using a plug. All the wires were spliced into other wires. There are two plugs behind the radio which are not plugged into anything. I figured one was the factory radio harness but all the harnesses for installing aftermarket radios from best buy, circuit city etc..dont match either plug. What are those plugs? How can I add a harness for the aftermarket radio instead of having rat fu**ed wires behind the radio?

Your going to have to splice in a new factory pig tail. Good luck. I had to trace all my wires manually b/c ford changed the colors so often over the years. Google the wire harness part # u need and it will tell u what pin Does what and u can trace it back wards once u find all ur wires. If it all works now, just take them off one by one and splice back into the new pig tai. This way u can ensure it works as it does now and u can use the aftermarket quick connects.

Thanks for the quick response. So the harnesses you buy from best buy have 2 plugs in the package I take it one is for the car and the other for the back of the radio? Any idea what those other two plugs back there would be?

No, those are supposed to plug into the factory harness (which u don't have) and then into the radio's pig tail. U need to go to a junk yard (pick and pull) and find a fox with what ever type of radio u have. Most likey just the basic two plug style is more than enough. If u need to take the bby parts with u to make sure they plug into the harness ur buying. Cut it back as far as u can to the firewall to ensure u have enough wire to make it easier to re solder back together.

Then use the diagram on ur bought harness from bby to tell u what wire/pin goes to what and re wire off of ur current set up. U can always refer to the pin locations to ensure ur doing it right. Be sure to get ur + and - terminals on the speakers correct so u don't get them out of phase. (one going up while another going down)

I found it best to remove the center console to get better access to the factory harness as my wires were cut pretty damn short. Good luck. Take ur time. Expect it to take while if its ur first time.

Wait, do u still have all the factory plugs and the wires are just tapped into the factory harness behind them? I must of read ur first post wrong. If u still have the factory "plugs"....Ignore me... Just go buy the new harness from bby, wire it to the radios pig tail and put it all in..

Do all of your speakers work?

And if your old radio has a schematic and it worked properly, label the wires as you cut them. This can help come time to reconnect the new harness.

i have run into your problem on both my stangs. the plugs you are looking at are for the factory tape deck and the optional sound system equalizer that you car may or may not have had...now just behind those (you may have to reach up behind the dash) is the same 2 plug black and gray connector that they sell at all the audio places. just trace the 2 plugs that u do see and they will take you right to them

Bingo, I just did mine a couple of months ago. It's clipped up behind the HVAC controls. I was able to use a standard Ford aftermarket head unit kit with the 2 long rectangular plugs.
