Have a problem. My car exhaust has a strong fuel RICH odor yet the plugs look very clean. Almost too clean. After 5000 miles they look like they just came out of the box. I feel bad for the cars following behind me.I could pay a shop to stick the sniffer up the exhaust buy I want to hear what you guys think.

If you can smell the exhaust, I would thik you would be on the idle circut.(sitting still) Your set up for cruise would be different and may be leaner. How did you set the idle?

Ditto on that. BTW, do you have a points-type ignition? I have a Pertronix and was amazed at the difference. I can run the car in the shop for a while without gagging on the gassy smell from the exhaust.

I had this happen before. The car even passed the smog test! Mine was a small vacuum leak on the intake manifold which caused the exhaust to smell like an over rich condition and burnt my eyes!

It a 65 289 w/ an edlebrock 4bbl. The carb was set a couple of years ago @ a dyno shop. I have a complete MSD ignition system. It smells strong @ idle or cruising.

My 68 with a stroked 393 smells the same way. It has clean spark plugs, runs great, but can't pinpoint the odor. Keep us posted if you figure anything out.

Does your exhaust run out the back of the car or is it cut off at the axle? Won't change your smell, but it will make it easier on you if run out the back.

My exhaust runs out the back of the car. I don't really smell it when I am driving. But I have had people pull up next to me to say it smells rich. Also when I back my car into the garage it smells strong.
