Pony was misbehaving...Help?

Today I was driving and when I tried to accelerate to get onto the highway, my car revved to like 5000RPM without accelerating.

After letting go of the gas and letting it downshift (Automatic tranny) it was fine after that for the rest of the trip..though it did feel a little weaker than normal.

Any suggestions as to what happened? I have a 2001 3.8L (Automatic) with 40,400 Miles. Recently changed oil and air filter.

It could be that the transmission fluid and filter need to be changed, a clogged filter can cause low line pressure which could lead to slipping, but it could also be a lot of other things too. You may want to see if you can find a reputable shop that will take a look at it.
