Popping noise in steering column???

I just replaced rack and pinion and put on a new steering wheel, I now have a popping noise in the steerting wheel and a creaking noise, these are both near the wheel itself, I felt of the column while turning the wheel and can feel it in the area near the top towards the wheel. Any idea of whats going on with it?

I have the same problem. Lots of slop in the steering as well. Hopefuly someone will chime in and help us both.

I know what we'll prob be told is that the column needs replaced, hoping there is a simple fix though

If you have the tilt steering wheel (looking at your year I'm guessing not) make sure these bolts are tight. Mustang Central.net Steering Column Fix

I think there is a bushing or bearing in the steering column, but I've to find anyone who has successfully replaced it. I have the popping too and I know of several more that do. I even went with the solid steering shaft but still with the popping at times.
