Like if i'm in park revving it, its not there, its there only under acceleration and you really hear it in 3rd gear.

So if i h ave spark knock will i hear it when not moving?

You will most likely only hear it under load.

So when in 3rd gear its more under a load, since its less torque pulling the car. As opposed to first or second, more torque, easier for the car to pull right?

Yes! It's really the same amount of torque, the multiplication through the transmission is different, but that doesn't matter.

Also note that temperature can make a difference as well. If you take the car out on a cold, winter day it might not ping like it would on a hot, summer day -- with all things being the same. But that's another issue.

The point is that you need to be under load to hear it.
