When is the color going on?

Just got my car back on the road after several years. Owned since 2011, blew it apart during Covid, then moved across the country. Redid a bunch due to CA smog, and just successfully smogged it this past week. Thankful to be driving it again!!

Bunch of little things to still do but so happy to be driving it again, even with the stock cam and 2.73’s (although I will be changing those).
What all did you have to do to it to pass SMOG?

What all did you have to do to it to pass SMOG?

Will try to keep this brief, but feel free to PM if you want more info. I am in SD as well.

Previously the car was in MA and I had planned to run a combo of AFR165, Trick Flow Stage 1 cam (not my 1st choice but custom cams were tough to get during covid), Non EGR ported GT40 intake, O/R H pipe, Accufab TB, Pro M MAF, 42 lb injectors, and bypassed smog pump.

I then moved from MA to CA and had to get the car appearing / running stock enough to pass. Intake went back to (ported) Stock HO, H pipe was replaced with original 4 cat h pipe. Smog pump was no longer bypassed. TB and MAF were removed and replaced with stock appearing ford stuff (Explorer TB and Supercoupe MAF). I ended up changing the cam to the Stock HO but probably not 100% required. Also changed the injectors down to 24 lbs (not required but was chasing a fueling issue). Then lightly "tuned" car with QH/BE combo - not much here beyond inputting data for the Inj/MAF and then doing a little logging with a wideband. The closer you can get the engine bay to appearing stock the better shot you have. That or using parts that have an EO #.

Nice, no specific reason i asked, was just curious. My car is all SMOG legal as well. I have some Twisted Wedge 170cc heads waiting to go on. Will keep the cam stock, and intake stock for now. I have some upgrade plans that i need to figure out to keep it 'stock' looking (sort of like you have), I plan on putting a PMAS 80MAF and 24lb injectors on, but need to figure out how to get the PMAS to look stock. If i can't, I also have a SN95 70mm MAF and my stock 19lb injectors... but i'm already pushing those to their limits with the Paxton and FMU.

I did pass SMOG in my last fox with a TFS stage 1 cam, just FYI. That was paired with Twisted Wedge 170cc heads (1.7 rockers) and the TFS Street Burner intake. I always got looks from the SMOG techs, but I just said as far as i know the cam is stock and it passed the sniffer...

You should be fine with the 24lb Injectors. They are a bit buried and I doubt many techs know the differences in injector color, espcially if they are the older / fat EV1's. Good luck with the PMAS, I had investigated a bit as well and couldn't figure out a way to get one to look stock. Maybe some sort of gutted original housing.

Good to know on the TFS - I had heard it would pass as well. I didn't love the low speed drivability although never really got through the tuning process. I was doing other work too so decided to just use the original cam.

Good news is that the SysteMAX has an EO #, so long term if I need more power it will be one of those and 1.7 rockers. Hope to see you on the road!

If you are going to do a little tuning then just get an 80mm MAF from a 2000GT (Ford part numbers) or the like and dump the curve into the tune. Run an Explorer upper and lower (Ford part numbers) and Explorer throttle body. The have zero idea what cam you are running and as long as it passes the sniffer test I would think they would not inquire. An I agree with PJV9126 that they would not know if you had the 42 lb/hr green tops in there as long as the tune was solid.
