I start up the car and the power steering fluid shoots out of the reservoir cap. Fill it up again and the pump stops making noise as the air bubbles slowly make their way out of the system. Power steering works fine again. 2 days later I started the car and the fluid shot out again. I have it filled to the proper level and purged the system of air. But it sprayed all the fluid out again. What could be the problem?

Do you ever turn the wheels during the downtime (without starting the car)?

I thought i just posted a reply to a thread about this very subject?

Anyways, are you "filling it up" or filling it to where it's supposed to be? If you FILL that neck, then you're over filling it and it will spray out of the cap hole.

I have turned the steering wheel without the engine running. What would that do? The power steering has worked well for the weekend but the pump makes a whining noise. I hear ford pumps always make noise so I don't think it sounds any different than before this problem arose. One thing that stands out is the fact that the fluid looks bubbly or foamy, is that normal while the car is running? I did flush out the system and bleed it about 2 weeks ago so fluid is good and that was only after it already acted up.

Turning the wheel with the car off displaces fluid from the rack to the reservoir. That fluid has no where to go (because the pump doesnt turn to place it back into the rack).

I've also seen cars do this when they are parked with the wheels turned all the way to lock.

Well, i just took it for a ride and it worked ok. I filled the reservoir to the cold mark only eventhough the car was already warmed up. That seemed to do the trick. I ll find out more when I start it after it has had time to cool down. Usually the problem was when the car was cold and I would turn the wheel all the way to make it out of my driveway. time will tell.

well I think 85ss302coupe got it right, well almost. I lowered the level to full cold mark and it works fine. Only once in the past 100 miles did it squirt out fluid but it was only a littlw and it was when I turned the wheel back and forth a couple of times. Thanks guys
