power steering leak right at the pump

Hey everyone:

I've had 9 Mustangs and fortunately never had a PS leak..until now.

My newest 'stang drips PS fluid out of the pressure line fitting at the pump. It's not out of the hose, it seeps out at the joint between the pump body and the fitting the line screws into. Of course, it's not loose.

What kind of seal is in there between the fitting and the pump body? I kind of need to have the part on hand before I tear into it since this is the only running car atm.

It is very rare for the pump to fitting seal to leak. What happens more often than not is the internal seals in flexible hose end leaks. These seals are NOT servicible. As such the hose assembly has to be replaced.

Suggest a close visual inspection to determine the true source of the leak. In answer to your original question, Ford uses a telfon washer that is very durable which is why leaks are so rare.

If you decide to replace the seal, heat it in water and use the tappered end of a socket extension to expand the seal to fit over the tread fittings. The seal will return to normal size after cooling.

I seem to specialize in rare problems.

I failed to mention that it isn't a pressure leak. It does not *appear* to be dropping fluid any when the engine is warm and running. It only seems to leak when everything cools off.

I did double check where it's coming out and it's not coming out of the "swivel" part of the connection. It seeps around the joint where that large metal adapter screws into the plastic reservoir.
