power steering pump that doesnt whine

Im getting my motor swapped and want to get rid of the whining power steering pump. I had replaced it previously with an auto zone one but it still whined, but I didnt really put a lot of miles on it before the motor blew (maybe 150). So i guess my question is if i should exchange for another auto zone cause it wont cost me anything or go with something else. Thanks

Every one I have had on my Capri since 1981 has whined to some degree. The replacements are usually noisier than the one that just failed, so I guess they get quieter over time.

It may have something to do with how well you bleed the system of air when you change it. I always get them to work fine, and some have lasted well over a 100k miles, but they still are somewhat noisey.

The best results I have ever had came from making 2 changes.

1) I used Redline ATF instead of p/s fluid. This does help make things quieter.
2) I used a larger diameter pulley (from a Bronco?). This slows down the pump, placing less stress on the internals.

Be sure to flush out all of the old fluid, as it does not lubricate well. Change the fluid when recommended.

I can no longer hear the p/s pump, but the 408w is fairly loud.
