Hey guys,

Will a new 5.0 style power steering pump produce too much pressure for a stock (but new) '68 power steering line? Should there be a pressure-relief valve anywhere on the system, or is there even such an animal?

One of my hoses blew apart at the coupling the other night and I'm just wondering if it is a bad hose or too much pressure from the new pump.

Thanks!

Kelton

Which hose?

65--which hose? I had trouble with cylinder hoses--the two small ones on the bottom of the system. Most places have them at the same length, however, I was able to find one place that had one hose .5 inches longer. That saved my couplings.

Still, I'm amazed at what a bad design the PS system is. :bang:

The newer pump is not the problem as it is valved to produce approximately the same max pressure as the earlier pump, from what I have been able to determine. It has been quite a while but I spoke to a Ford engineer about this issue and he assured me the newer pump would work fine.

Thanks Ronstang...I'm thinking (hoping) it was just a bad hose.

Meweehaa, Im not sure...the pump came on my car when I got it. I will try to get a picture of how it is mounted for you though if you'd like?

Thanks!

C'ya!

Kelton

ps - turns out it was a poorly crimped DIY hose...replaced with a correct replacement part and everything is A-OK.
