Why aren't the steering racks interchangeable between 94/95 model years and 96-98/04 years?

Is it where the hoses mount to the rack?

Is it a different size?

Are the dimensions different?

I have a 94 GT and have access to MANY steering racks from a '97 LX, '97 GT, '00 Saleen, 96 GT, and a 98 Cobra.

Why can't I use any of these? Specifically, what are the TRUE differences?

Thank you for any advice in advance. My car is so sloppy driving down the road, I need to swap the rack out for a good, tight unit.

As far as I know they're all interchangable. On most of the web sites they show replacement racks as a single part for all '94 to '04 mustangs.

The are interchangeable. For a good road racing rack you want an 03-04 Cobra rack or find a 2000 R owner, kill them and steal their steering rack for pure SN95 steering nirvana.

That's what I thought, that theyre all interchangeable... But autozone lists the rack for my 94 GT for $102 and the rack for a 97 GT (to two of which I have access) for $174...

Why the hell is there an 80% price increase, ya know?

Because Autozone sucks? There are different part numbers from Ford for all the years, but they will physically bolt in place.
