i read a great writeup about swapping the power steering pump/hoses to stop whining but it didn't work for me.

http://www.stangnet.com/mustang-forums/701655-how-i-got-rid-power-steering-whine.html

i added a purolater filter on the return side of the pump and it's not kinked or bent up to make it work. anyway while i had the front wheels up, i started to bleed the system and while i was twisting the wheel left and right i noticed my front tires like making a jerky motion whichever way i was twisting and the power steering was whining. could this be caused by the filter restricting fluid flow? i know i installed it the right way, the fluid flows into from the pump through the filter into the cooler and from the cooler to the rack. i did use the type f fluid and flushed out the old and added new. i dunno i'm lost, somebody help!

Do not use Type F fluid for the P/S system! That's for '60's & '70's Ford transmissions only. It is a sticky fluid and will dry out seals and may not treat the pump vanes very well either. Flush all that fluid out ASAP and refill with the recommended type. I'm thinkin' a Mercon IV or the synthetic Mercon V is recommended.

The fluid in P/S systems are quite often neglected and if not changed/flushed periodically will do damage to the pump vanes and results in the "whining". Do a fluid change and give it a week or so and see if the whining subsides. If not, the pump may have to be replaced.

Good Luck, GT

i looked further into this after your post. my haynes manual says to use mercon, but the computers at advance auto says type f and castrol recommended type f. i then pulled out my owner's manual and cross referenced the recommended part number from ford and the castrol type f on the back of the bottle said it exceeded the ford recomendation. you can step up to the mercon or higher for the system but nothing lower than type f. that's for both 94-95 cars, but now in 96 it changed to mercon. ford says that type f is fine for the cars but mercon won't hurt it. also my whining has gone completely away!
