Pre-Build questions. im undecided

Alright guys first things first. im a T5 guy but im sticking with the auto on this one. its an 88' GT thats bone stock other then a CAI. even has the smog pump still hooked up.(in Detroit its pretty rare)..i have the AOD in there right now and im gonna do a few upgrades to it. Gonna be mainly a street car but it will see the traxk a coupke times a month as well. my goal for this year is low to mid 12's wich shouldnt be hard. im gonna run gt40 heads and upper and lower(all ported). full performance exhaust.and all the basic bolt ons.. the thing on my mind right now is the stall speed..i know stock is around 1,800 rpm. im gonna run 4.10 gears. i know the cam duration has a little to do with it but what stall speed would be best??? My guess was around 2,300..i have a million questions but this is stuck in my head..any help will be greatly appreciated then we can mpve pn to my otger setup questions...thanks

My tuner recommended a Precision Industries 3000 stall after looking at the results from my dyno pulls. I don't think going from 1800 to 2300 is worth all the work it's gonna take to change the TC. He also recommended a Silver Fox valve body.

Good point. i looked at the Silver fox VBs n they are fairly priced and everyone seems to like them. another question is weather or not i should go full manual or not. im not sure how it would effect street driveability. i seen one that i think was tci or transgo n it kept the auto funtions in drive but allowed the other gears to reach 5500rpm if you want them too.

I'm still deciding on which VB also, I think Silver Fox makes a manual/auto also, the OD is locked out with a solenoid.

I wouldn't want a street car with a 3000 stall. That would build up so much heat.
And if you run the stock cam, you would literally be wasting power with a 3000 stall converter. Just for sh!ts and gigs lets say the stock cam starts making power at 2000 RPM. You put a 3000 stall in, you are literally not using the usable power from 2000 RPM to 3000 RPM.

Sure a 3k stall would be fun and be good for the track, but not for a street car with a stock cam. You'll build up loads of heat from the converter (heat is the #1 enemy of autos) and your fuel economy will suffer. If it was my car, a 2500 stall would be the absolute MAX I'd go with your set up and your intentions.

I agree %100 thats why i said 2400. i was thinking the Lunati VooDoo 280 cam. its not too much. im gonna run a trans cooler regaurdless. im still confused on weather or not i want a lock or non-lock converter though. can you give me an idea on what i would benifit from most?...thanks

First nail down your engine upgrades it will greatly effect the converter specs. A 3000 converter is pretty healthy on the street, run a good trans cooler with a fan if possible.

Personally for an AOD car I prefer edgeracingconverters.com Andre is great....

Agreed, the engine combo will dictate the stall you choose. My particular combo w/the KB blower, per my tuner, a 3000 would fit the bill. I wanted to do the trans before my tune but EVERYONE told me to wait till the dyno pulls are done and the tuner gives his recommendation on stall speed.
