Pressure plate forks compress when plate is tightened to flywell ?? WTF! HELP!!

In the midst of a engine swap, anyone know why the fingers on the pressure plate would compress when the pressure plate itself is tightened to the flywheel? got the engine in and its the pressure plate is engaged, now ive got the motor pulled again! Thanks!!!!!!!

Check to see if the clutch disc was installed backwards and make sure the pressure is lined up w/ the dowels on the flywheel.It is possible to overtighten the pressure plate. I was helping a friend put a centerforce clutch in his mustang and had the same problem and later figured out we overtightened the pressure plate

May be I am misunderstanding the question here, but as you bolt on the pressure plate, there is supposed to be compression of the pressure plate against the friction disc - this is how the clutch works. Then when you press the clutch in, the throw out bearing pushes against the fingers of the pressure plate to release the pressure on the friction plate and allow you to change gears.

If this isn't what you are asking feel free to set me straight.

if you tighten the pressure plate down the fingers are supposed to go in.if it doesn't then something is really wrong.did you put the disc in backwards?the raised side of the disc goes into the pressure plate.

This is correct (of course). I have a D/F Centerforce and it seems like it's even more appearant (the fingers tightening I mean) on the centerforce than it was on the stock clutch.

thanks for the replies, got it all lined out now! Know i'll know thats the norm for them to do that during installation! I sweated there for a min
