turn the engine over til the first cylinder is at Top Dead Center.... then put the distributor in with the rotor placed on the number one plug. Then re-time it when you start it up.
when putting #1 to tdc, put your finger over the spark plug hole to make sure you feel air compressing, that way your not 180 degrees off, its a simple mistake that can have you swearing up a storm when it doesn't run.

right. remember that on the exhaust stroke a small amount of air will blow on your finger - good advice by stealth to remember this - it can prevent lots of headaches.
