Some interesting items for your neighbor to note on that chart: Truck 90dB, power mower at 3 feet 107dB, and motorcycle 100dB.

I say interesting because all of those are typical noisemakers you will encounter in the same place. Sure you wouldn't run a mower that early in the morning. But you would drive a truck and motorcycle without receiving a traffic violation. And remember, the dB scale is logarithmic, so the difference between 85dB and these examples is huge.

I'd say you should be polite and apologize if the topic ever comes up, but don't give your idiot neighbor a second thought.

There is a guy diagnal from me that is like minded to your pest. He has gone as far to barge into the house behind me (across the street from him as I live on a corner) and bitch out the guy...who is a quadraplegic (sp?) . I went and talked to the neighbor behind me (super nice guy too) and really what could he do...call the cops and have a guy do god knows what and when or dont do anything and just deal with some tard? This jackass has gone as far to blow leaves/grass into neighbors yards and then YELL at them to clean up their yard. Plus he thinks he is some kind of country boy , ,, since I am from "the country" I just laugh when I see him outside in what is a suburb of St. Louis.

I called the cops as he said he was going call the cops on me. When I called the Police they told me he can take a long walk off a short pier and he is PITFA and if he has an issue they would gladly tell him to pound sand on my behalf.

One day he was out tossing leaves into the park that is across the street from me and next door to him. The wife and I were leaving and I noticed him giving me a "hard" look. I just looked at him directly non stop and he quickly looked down and turned around. I pulled out of the driveway and stopped right in front of him rolled down the window and just waited for him to turn around to see if he had anything he wanted to say to my face. You guessed it...he just kept putting leaves into the park looking down at the ground. Best part is he is like 35-40 and lives at home with mom and yells/treats her like crap.

Be the neighbor and discuss it...if he will talk. I am not saying fight the idiot and get arrested. One thing I have noticed since moving from the country is people in suburbia are not in contact with people that live by them. They seem to think the police are there to babysit and deal with their lives only. Not saying you all need to be best friends/beer buddies but if there is an issue you should both be able and ADULT enough to voice yourself. Most people seem to hide behind the fact in modern suburbia people dont talk much.

He is being a tard because of his own shortcomings and the only way he can deal with it is to be a child. If he wont talk...dont worry and if the po-po does show. Be civil and show the car does have cats/mufflers and go from there. That or have a party with a lot of car buddies and leave late at night/early Sat. morning.

I say rev that bitch up good next time. This reminds me of a sound clip I used to have of a guy reving up his bike and yelling "good morning my neighbor" I might have to see if I can find that and post it up

i say borrow a friends harley for a couple of weeks or so and ride it to work every day. they are legal and i'm sure they are much louder than your car is.

85dB isn't much and anything that guy is measuring isn't going to be accurate anyways.

If that guy wants peace and quiet, he should save up some money, get a better paying job, and plan on buying a house. Even then, a Mustang might be nearby. My car can be loud and I know my neighbors hear it. My wife hears it a couple blocks away (low drone) from outside, but not at all if she's inside.

Like said before, talk to the guy and be nice about it. You're not going to change anything, just be nice and he'll probably change his attitude quickly. If you know anything about music or playing an instrument, bring that up and you'll be on your way to shutting him up.

+1 on the comment about suburbanites not talking to each other. Not a whole lot can be done since that is where society and technology is headed. I can do all my daily business and rarely meet face to face with anyone. Sometimes you gotta go out of your way to be neighborly.

im in the same situation as you guys, and have also concluded that the complaints are stemming more from his own shortcomings than from my car. in my case its makes no sense to complain about my car when where literally next door to a fire station and under a flight path

besides unless his decibel test was carried out under the controlled conditions as described in your local RCW, his "test" means NOTHING

And since he wont talk to you about it, dont talk to him about it. Explain to your landlord that its legal, per state law, and go on about your day

As to your neighbor, he just doesn't like loud anything it sounds like OR mustangs..and is a PIA

85db IS loud but probably not illegal. I know, I have NORMAL hearing and a DB meter. OSHA requires you to wear hearing protection 80 or above. 100 db is EXTREMELY loud and will cause hearing damage in minutes. Many mechanics, machine operators and car guys are desensitized to it so most of us are no authority on the subject, lol. ..and there's also the "macho" factor or "aww man that ain't loud! whats matter you a p#$$y?"

William Shattner, captain kirk on star trek thought it was too girly to go around on the set with ear plugs during minor explosions. He now has tinitis or ringing of the ears that almost drove him insane. Regardles, we are too careless with our hearing. I wear ear protections when using the mower. You are an idiot if you don't.

Not trying to contradict everyone or get off topic..but on "hearing" .. but someone told us guys it was sissy to realize when machinery (in general) is too loud.. a drill, lawnmower..etc and you are not a man if you take precautiuons - and we end up with hearing loss.

i've been mowing my own lawn for 25 years now, and i have never used hearing protection. and my hearing seems fine to me. maybe my mower is not as loud as the others or something

Many people however, think that the entire neighborhood should live by their rules and guidelines.

And 85db IS loud, continuously over an extended period of time, which is what OSHA is concerned with.

No one is gonna go deaf because on their neighbors car, anymore so than they would because of a passing train, over-flying airplane, fourth of july celebrations etc.
