Ok so I finally picked up the 90 GT I was telling everyone about. I just need to pick up the DA and some paint stripper and I can get started. This car was a Tenn. car its whole life, not sure if that helped the rust or not, but there isnt hardly any rust, I expected a lot more since its been gutted and sitting in a field for the last 4 yrs!. Hell the floor boards are even perfect and are even holding water! lol Anyway this is going to be a very long project, and not to mention time consuming and money wise I cant do much at 1 given time, but Ive always loved stangs, and Ive always wanted to do this, and besides ive got time, not in any hurry. So with that said I will update as I get things done, so follow if you will... Ohh yeah and did I mention I picked this thing up for a couple hundred bucks:D

that rust fighter looks more like something you would spray on the interior of the door where paint cant get to. That isnt something you would spray on the exterior of the car as the paint is pretty much your rust preventer anyways. Are you maybe referring to something like a sealer???

It says it replaces protection which is applied at the factory and destroyed in the repair procedure. and Ideal for restoring corrosion protection following the repair of hem flanges, door skins, rocker panels, and similiar areas.

correct, all of which, when installed, have an area that you cannot get to because it faces the interior of the car. Plus it says-
"Internal panel coating in aerosol form used for corrosion protection." which leads me to believe it is used for the underside coating.

I am pretty sure this is used when you take a panel (lets say a rocker panel) off the car. The underside is not seen when it is installed. But if condensation builds up in this area an the metal is left bare then the piece will rust from inside out. You would then spray this on the underside before putting the panel back on.

I just wasnt sure if you were wanting to use this on the outer fender,hood, roof, etc. that is seen. If so then I dont think this is what you would use. I would look for a sealer which is put down after the car is stripped down to metal.

ok cool, thats what someone directed me to. i am looking for sealer for outside of car, hood, fenders, etc. what should i get? since i already bought the stuff above i will use it on floor boards. thanks for quick reply!

no problem. Sealer I think would depend on the type of paint and primer you are going to use. I know dupont/nason is a decent setup but then again it needs to be compatible with the paint you are going to use. I am sure someone with more paint experience will chime in for add'l info or tell me I am wrong. Talk to a few paint supply shops as well as see what they suggest.

The first thing you need to do is get the car sanded down to get an idea of what body work needs to be done, or if there are old repairs that were done incorrectly that need attention. So as long you do not sand down to bare metal and/or do not want a show type finish then you can use a urethane primer. I am a big fan of the Nason (Dupont) line of paints. The enamel is the basic and does not last long (4 years gloss if taken care of) and is easily chiped. Enamel also takes forever to fully cure. I use the Urethane 2K. With a good prep and primer it will last for a long time and is pretty inexpensive. It's also a lot more chip resistant and has a no-recoat window. Both these paints are single stage. Dupont's 2 stage Chroma Base is a great system to but more expensive. Any paint system you decide to go with can be used with a sealer, however, it needs to match it, so just ask you paint supply house for compatibility.

ok based on what ive gathered and what i can afford to spend right now, here are my plans. these are not set in stone so if im really messing up please inform me cause i will admit im a newb at this. Ok I was going to strip the old paint off, im not going to do that now. what im going to do is use a orbital power sander on whole car, then im going to block the whole car, spray black and block again to make sure everything is flat. the bad spots i run into I will sand deeper, add filler and smooth out. as for the engine bay, im going to fill holes in, use a angle grinder on welds, and then polish the welds, then i will add body filler and bar sand. then I will seal the car, add primer, and paint. im going with house of kolor silver orion for the car, and black racing stripes. black also being house of kolor paint.

What I dont fully understand yet it what grit sandpaper to use when?

what grit should i use on the orbital sander?

What grit on the block sanding? Im going to buy this

Im also going to sodablast under the whole car, seal/primer and paint it black. for the inside im going to maybe blast, paint black, seal with 3m rust fighter, cover everything in dynomat, and install carpet/interior.

anything else im missing here?

nice score for 200 bucks by the way i am a newb as well and you see what i accomplished thus far with my car.i joined alot of different forums and did alot of reading sounds like your going in the right direction .i knew i wanted to strip my car down to nothing to make sure there were no surprises as stated above.good luck i sent you a pm

Your plan of attack is good but when you get it to metal, seal it with an EPOXY PRIMER. Then when that is dry you can scuff that up and apply body filler to that. After your done with your body work, get a nice 2K Urethane Primer filler. Then wet sand to 600 grit sand paper then spray away!

Yes, thats the ticket. Also might want to use a good surface prep/wax/grease remover. All this talk of painting has me wanting a new project now...


I'm curious as to what you have to shot the paint with? paint gun, air compressor, etc?

Im from eastern ky. Drove about 4 hrs and picked it up for a couple hundred bucks. I plan on tearing car down to bare metal, including filling in holes in engine bay, sand blasting bay floors and underneath and buidling car from top to bottom. First Im going to start working on sanding everything down, working on engine bay. Then I plan on sandblasting floorboards, sealing and installing dynomat everywhere inside. Then blasting under car and sealing. After that Im going to focus on suspension work. I will then get it painted house of kolor orion silver with house of kolor black racing stripes (just like my 1st stang was that I ended up having to sell :( ) I will have all black interior with suade headliner, door pieces, and sun visors, and the new mach 1 87-93 balck leather interior. Outside of car will have cobra r hood, cobra ground effects, stalker front bumper, and either a free air dam rear bumper or cobra rear bumper, and a saleen or cobra spoler. as for the fun part it will be powered by 408 stroker and tremic tko. as for wheels it will have 5 lug conversion with 17" black saleens in front and 18" in the back. What sucks is the interior is all shot pretty much so Im going to have to buy it piece by piece. good thing is Im going to dye/paint all the interior black so I can buy any color interior and peice that together. If anyone has any pieces laying around for a good price shipped to 41143 pm me. (if that last statment is not allowed on this forum, mods please remove.)

so what do you think? Its honestly probably going to take me 3 or 4 yrs if not longer to complete cause im a newly single dad with another that isnt even here yet, and child support will get most of my funds :( but follow this thread It will be a good one! But honestly I would love to hear your comments good or bad, cause I want it done right and the best it can be, and with the help and advice of you all I think its possible. with that said I will probably be asking alot of noob and stipid questions so sorry in advance. also am i allowed to make a list of parts needed in here or is that only allowed in classifieds?
