How do you properly set the timing on a 87 5.0 mustang.

Iwas trying to set it with the plug out after car is warmed up.
I set it were I wanted and when I put the plug in it jumps approx 10degrees
is that normal? I checked th plug and it is 0 ohms.

Yes, the computer advances the timing when the SPOUT plug is in place. Removing it locks the spark advance to whatever base timing you set with the timing light. Best performance for street stangs is 10-14 degrees advance, SPOUT out.

the spout is the small plug that is near the distributer and i think it comes from the wires that go to the TFI mod.

now that we are on the subject, is the timing mark that is on the timing cover 0* ? if so, wich side of that timing mark is advanced and wich way do you turn the distributer to advance it?

i dont think there is a timing mark on the TC. the balancer has timing marks and there is a timing pointer mounted to the block (the pointer hangs over the timing marks).

Andy (Rio5.0) has recently posted some nice pics of the balancer and timing marks, if interested.

my vague memory says that turning the dizzy clockwise advances timing. i could be wrong - a timing light will clear that right up.

good luck.

you are right about the mark being on the block, it on the TC on Chevys

i have put a timing light on the car and i turned the dis. clockwise a little (no * marks on the HB) and whenever it was at WOT there was a loud squeeling sound and the car ran like crap so i put it back with the timing marks lining up.

the timing degrees should be etched into the balancer. i periodically get under and wipe the balancer down and use a silver marker to mark the timing marks i want (10, 14*, etc).

if you dont see marks even after clean up, i would check the balancer's elastomer and look for signs of outer ring slippage or other issues.

good luck.

A little hobby or touch up paint on the balancer marks helps make them easy to see. I use red for TDC, white for 10* BTDC & blue for BTDC 14*.
