This Isn't Mustang Knowledge.......anyone with a battery could tell you its a bad Connection...... wiggle the battery connection.....it should be fine.

The connection is definitely good on the battery, and there is no corrosion on any of the wires surrounding it. The shop where I can use a lift is closed until Thursday. So I'll have an update then.

Over the course of the week the problem got worse, but I noticed that if I held the key on "Start" for a few seconds, the car would start. I held it for about 30 seconds one time, but it always fired up. So I think that there was a problem with the relay.

I went to the shop this morning and replaced the starter. Everything works great now.

My Cougar had a problem like this. Turned out to be the starter and flexplate in the transmission (AOD).

This is whats been going on with my mom's Focus, usually when the car is hot. She keeps taking it to these idiot service techs where she bought it (it's under warrenty). They say they have replaced the starter twice and the cables from the battery to the starter. It's to the point where you can hear the Bendix spring pushing the gear (on the starter sol.) out to meet the ring gear (on the flywheel/flexplate) and it just smaks the flexplate and won't mesh together. The starter doesn't turn because the gear doesnt travel all the way out to meet the flexplate and the contacts in the starter solinoid dont close causing no power to be transfered into the starter motor itself. This seems to be more common with auto's. Is your car a auto? The problem is usually the teeth on the ring gear on the flywheel/flexplate didn't get deburred correctly causing the starter drive gear's teeth to get chewed up. This is what happens when you farm work out to suppliers that have cheap labor. You get poor quality, I deal with quality issues alot with vended out work were I work. Glad you got it fixed but it may come back, they fixed my mom's car too but it just started doing it again (lasted about 6 months).
