Putting it in R while driving

Hey, let's say theres this guy, who owns a 2001 Mustang GT. One day he was driving along and was coming up to a tunnel and thought to himself, "Hmm, while I'm in this tunnel, I think I shall put it in N so I can rev and hear the engine. That would be swell."

So he enters the tunnel and while going about 40, takes his foot off the gas to put it in N, but he accidentally goes to far and puts it in R (auto tranny). The rear tires squeal and the car fishtails a bit, and he realizes what an idiot he was.

What could have been damaged by doing this?

Sadly it's true, I think i'm going to take it in for a drivetrain inspection.

Nothing seems to be damaged really, the car shifts into each gear smoothly and quickly, except Reverse it takes almost a second and I think I can hear noises from the rear end, but I don't know if it is just the car body squeaking or what.

I also think there is a really faint grinding noise while i'm driving, but I don't know if im just listening really hard for any noises right now. I don't hear anything when I open my window, or drive through tunnels/next to other cars where you can hear the noises your car makes bouncing off tunnel walls/cars.

It might have grinded some gears. I know I did this in a van (wasn't mine) one time and it made a horrible grinding noise. Good thing I was only doing about 15 MPH. The funny part is explaining it to the dealer.

When I was a kid, a juvenile delinquent I used to hang out with would steal cars and do this on purpose. It usually took several or many attempts of doing this to ruin the tranny. It could have damaged your universal joints. Do you hear a "clunk" when you go into gear?

I didn't hear any grinding when I did it. It locked up right away and the tires squealed. I didn't have my foot on the gas either so that probably helped.

No noises when going into any gear except for reverse. I THINK there is a quiet noise but it might be nothing.

Yikes!!! It sounds like you might have got off lucky though. No noise is good news!

I test drove a camaro ss one time not too long ago just for kicks, and when I came rolling back in to the parking lot of the dealership, I tried to put it in neutral to rev the crap out of it, but accidentally want too far like you did, and squealed the **** out of the tires.. every single salesman in the parking lot stopped what they were doing and stared with jaws dropped.

I get out of the car and said, (loudly to make it seem as though I was angry,) "Man those are touchy brakes!!" and quickly got the hell out of there.

If you didn't hear a grind or lound clunk you most likely got away lucky. I know Automatics have a safety that sometimes helps prevent damage but not in manuals

My friend did this on his Jaguar X-Type. He blew the trans and rear end diff. Definitly have it checked out.

At this point, this appears to be purely hypothetical. But then, I read this post a bit further and the truth shines.

I used to have a V6 auto and did this going about 50 mph (When I was much younger and way dumber). The rear wheels locked up, the car spun completely out, and the car actually shut itself off with the emergency fuel cut-off. Well I sold the car to my sister about a year after that and there are still no problems 4 years down the road, still shifts smoothly and promptly. But as they say, better safe than sorry, it wouldn't hurt (except the pocketbook) to go have it looked at just to make sure.

I have not driven an auto Mustang but every other auto I have driven did not require you to push the button in at all to shift into Neutral but does for Reverse. In fact, you should be able to pull it all the way into 1 (with the button depressed) and shift all the way forward through N without using the button. The button is there to prevent from down shifting (or R).

when i had my auto you could go from R to D without pressing the button. go from 1 -> 2 -> D without button but not from D to neutral without pressing the button

also needed to press the button to go from neutral to R.. AODE BTW
