Quarter glass mounting tape?

Ok, does anyone here have any experience with the 69-70 rear quarter glass coming off from the chrome? Mine was really loose, and I simply just tugged at the chrome, and it came off the glass. That mounting tape was a pain to get out of the channel, but can I simply take the two pieces to a glass shop, or am I screwed?

Anyone know?

is it tape, or some sort of sticky gasket material? A glass shop could probably help you, so long as everything is intact and all it needs is to be re-mounted. Good luck.

I was assuming it was some sort of double sided tar based tape, but I am not a glass guy.

I guess I will just take it down tomorrow.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo don't take it to a glass shop. I don't know if you ever read the posts about my experience with trying to have a glass shop do mine, but let's just say it wound up involving some damaged trim, some violence, the police, a threatened lawsuit (against me), and me doing them my self. I assume they are done pretty similar to the glass on my car. I found 1 out of 20+ shops I talked to who said he knew how to do it, then they F'd up my trim

It is called Bulk Glass Tape. I couldn't find it at any Mustang supplier, paint & body supply, etc.. I finally found it at a Vintage Ford Truck parts place here in So. Cal. It feels sort of like leather, no adhesive. The trim piece actually compresses it. When it gets old, dry, and thin the trim won't hold.

Here's how I did it. I removed the screws holding the trim piece to the frame. I laid a piece of felt on the glass and a block of wood on top of it. Then I used a small "soft" mallet to tap the trim piece off the glass and the frame off the glass. Next you would place the bulk glass tape over the edges of the glass (I used clothes pins to hold it over nite and then it would retain most of it's shape). Then I tapped the glass into the frame using the soft mallet, then tapped the trim piece onto the glass in the same manner.

If you want to do it yourself and can't find the tape e-mail me and I'll see if I have some left, or I can buy it for you here and ship it to you.

gp...does this tape come in different widths, and thicknesses? The Chrome piece has a channel that is 3/8" wide, and the glass is 3/16 wide.

Was yours the same widths?

Here is a picture of the channel, at the top and bottom I would have to custom cut the tape around those little dog ear things, and so I would need a total width of like 2.5" and then just cut it out to fit the piece.

This is upsetting, as I am getting close to getting this car together, and this would hold me up big time. I would have to have to buy new quarter windows.

Here is what the whole thing looks like. This chrome piece has to hold the glass by itself...there is no frame...would it still work?

I looked in my 1965 - 1973 Mustang Parts Illustrations Catalog and it appears that they used the bulk glass tape. Take a look at the pic below. The tape is wide (don remember the exact specs). I will look today to see if I have some of the tape left over. If I do you would only need to pay the postage. If I don't have any left over I will contact the Ford truck place and get the specs and cost for you.
