I was curious what happened to all those dies that were used to stamp out all these floors, quarters, fenders, etc for our cars? Are these available anywhere for purchase? What about these dies people are using to stamp reproductions panels? Are they just created to produce a product close to ford's original tooling but not exactly the same? Anyone know how much these dies usually cost to make or purchase? Any info on ANYTHING would be appreciated.

the original dies are likely quite worn out by now. the automakers replace them after a certain number of parts are produced on the dies to prevent problems with fitment on the lines. the old dies are usually sold to the after market so they can produce replacement parts. other companies will find good original sheet metal to make dies from. the dies are rather expensive, even when reverse engineered. the last time i heard a price on them was about 15 years ago, and they ran something like 10k per die.
My family business produces cut to size steel blanks in anything from 24ga to 14ga. We are connected directly with the mill and get our steel at very low prices. I was thinking of somehow organizing a production process that would allow us to stamp out most of the replacement steel parts for our classic mustangs. Our prices would be lower than all of the competition because of our low overhead and excellent prices of our suppliers, which gives us a strong competitive advantage. The competition will have a much much smaller profit margin than us, which allows us to be able to charge much cheaper prices while making the same amount of money. I have just started researching whether this would be feasible or not, and this seems like the best place to ask my first questions!

We have access to all the machinery we need, the only concern I had was the dies, locating them, and cost of possibly having new ones made.
