Question about Headers, exhaust, etc...

Okay, say I want to get headers on my car and I get:

slp long tube headers,
slp xpipew/cats,

do you need to get exhaust as well? Like will the Stock exhaust not be able to handle them.

What I am asking, is this thing a total package deal no matter what, if you get headers, (long tube), you need to get an H-pipe or X-pipe with CATs AND exhaust, for instance, if I get the slp loudmouths, I would have:

slp long tube headers,
slp xpipew/cats,
slp loudmouth exhaust,

------------

Also, can you mix and match them. Say I get:

slp long tube headers,
slp xpipew/cats,

but have

Flowmasters American Thunder Exhaust

Would this work, or do you have to pretty much get things that work well together???? and some things definitely don't or something?

--------

I know that if you get Long tube headers you must get CATS with them to make them legal. So i understand that. So if I were to get SLP long tube headers the combo can be:

slp long tube headers,
slp xpipew/cats

but what I am trying to figure out is, do you need exhaust as well, replacing the stock. And can you mix and match the brands.

Or am I missing something or needing something else with this combination below, lets say:

JBA Long tube headers
H-pipe with CATS
Some exhaust (not stock thinking they may need to be replaced - so Flowmasters American Thunder)

Would that work?

A little insight on this would be helpful, thanks!

Headers and X/H-pipes are both parts of the exhaust. I assume you're talking about the mufflers. Swapping out for high-flow mufflers may give a few more horses, but it's more for sound. The X/H-pipe and the mufflers (and the headers?) alter the tone of the exhaust. As long as they fit, stock mufflers would be fine.

Not sure on the cats w/ long tube headers. I'm sure someone makes them work, though.

I'd suggest listening to sound clips online before deciding what it is you buy. If you're after more power, the exhaust shouldn't be the first thing you upgrade.

Okay, I think I get it now. So I can get long tube headers that will require an X/H pipe w/ Cats and that is basically your exhaust and they can work well with the stock mufflers. And then if I wanted to, I could get different mufflers such as Flowmasters American Thunder, for example.

So I could get these Kooks

And leave it as that, just use the stock mufflers. And then if I wanted to later on, I could get the Flowmasters American Thunder mufflers, if I wanted too, granted that the combination is compatible, meaning they fit together. Is this correct???

Or vice versa, get mufflers and leave it at that, and then if i ever wanted to, get the exhaust system. Do I have this all correct now?

The stock axle back should work fine.

Your referring to the stock mufflers right? I'm getting that confused with axle back.

Your referring to the stock mufflers right? I'm getting that confused with axle back.

The axle-backs are the most popular (bolt up after the rear axle).
I started the Bassani Stainless axle-backs and loved them, (The shoot out showed them best for the dyno tests also.)
I bought a set of the Bassani Stainless X-pipe w/hi-flow cats, and then the Bassani axle backs sounded like *****. (Go figure).
Bought a set of axle backs made by Jegs for $239.00 (Turbo mufflers w/tips), and they aren't too bad. (for sale also)
Bought a set of Magnaflow Magnapacks used on Ebay. (Glasspacks).
Not realising that the Magnapack normally come with their own mid-pipes and they were not included in the sale, they would not fit my stock mid-pipes. Had to do some cutting and welding to get them to work.
Love the sound now, and are a perfect complement to the Bassani X-pipe.
Waiting for the Flow tech headers now to see where the sound is headed next.
I likely will get the New Bassani 4605-5R (race) axlebacks next. (Glasspacks). Look like the Magnapacks. (A friend of mine is sponsored by Bassani).

Oh yeah, one other thing.

I've already included a CAI with a SCT Cal2 tune to the car.

Does getting new mufflers, (such as flowmasters), will that require for me to re-tune my car???

Also, what about getting headers, x-pipe, all that with the exhaust system? Will I need to re-tune my car for that as well.

I'm curious cause, if so then i'll probably wait till I get both and knock it all out at one time!!!

So far I have not had to re-tune for the exhaust.
From what I have read at the SCT forums the headers should not require it either.
Guess if I get a CEL I'll have to get a dyno tweak to my SCT tune.
