Question about Oil Leak and a Breather?

I have 2 oil leaks it seems, my front main and rear main seals. I want to get these fixed but am waiting for the weather to be better. My car is my daily driver and I was just wondering if I put a breather on would it make my seals leak less? Would this cause more problems? Also is there any place that just sells a vented oil cap?

Thanks

Have you checked to make sure your PCV screen isn't plugged up and working well? It'll pull a vacuum on the crankcase to try to keep the oil in. Have you noticed your oil dipstick pushed out? It'll pop out if there is any pressure.

K&N makes a screw-in valve cover breather, this will just make a vacuum leak for the PCV to pull unmetered air through but some guys have bad enough blowby and have to run them. I think this is it, measure your oil fill tube to be sure: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=KNN-62-1495&N=700+0&autoview=sku

If your PCV is clogged, that can cause crankcase pressure to find the next least path of resistance (often the crank seals). You knew that.

You can get vented oil caps (with a breather/element on top) from places like UPR. If you do this, seal the PCV (run a pure PCV or run pure breathers. No hybrids).

Either set-up should not cause a bottleneck, though it's generally easier to create more ventillation with breathers. The downside is that breathers are passive, whereas the PCV actively scavenges vapors.

Good luck.

EDIT: wise ol' Wes posted while I pecked.

Thanks guys for the info...Also I just have one other question that is going on with my oil pressure. I still have the stock gauge and everyone says it is a dummy but this is what I have been noticing with mine. Normally mine sits straight up and down or maybe a little bit more to the right. Recently my car has been sitting down to the left a little bit and the needle doesnt go up to that fast anymore. Also it will still have the days or random start ups where it does still sit straight up and down. Is there any cause for this? Could this actually be because my seals are so bad that they are loosing pressure out of them?

Thanks,

Dan

The oil pressure sending unit is just an on/off pressure switch.

You should have a vent line from the oil filler neck to the air intake tube so a vented cap shouldn't be necessary or helpful.

If the primary PCV pipeline is clogged, the secondary line is not sufficient (it's bi-directional, allowing air back in and helping a little at WOT).

The leaks don't affect pressure.
