Question about Oil Pump Install

My question is about the oil pump driveshaft. Which way does it go in, theres like a metal thing on it about an inch from the bottom to keep it from moving i guess. Anyways does the part with the metal thing on it go up toward the distributor or down toward the pump??

I apologize for calling it a "thing" i dunno what else to call it

The metal "clip" goes on the pump side. You have to install the shaft from the bottom up. The "clip" is there so when you pull the distributor the shaft doesn't fall to the pan.

Are you sure? I've always put the clip to the top side so that when the distributor is pulled out, the shaft doesn't come out of the pump.

the clip does go to the top of the driveshaft or the pointed end of the driveshaft so when you take the distributor out or turn the engine over if its on a stand the driveshaft doesn't fall out. It needs to go in from the bottom up as well.

im doing the same crap right now... we installed the oil pump, then flipped the motor back over only to realize that we have to take the summab1tch back off, insert it from the bottom up, and the little clip goes on the bottom (oil pump side) so like dude said earlier, if you pull the dizzy out, it wont let it fall into the oil pan. if you put the clip on the top side (dizzy side) and it sticks inside the dizzy, you will play hell trying to get it back down into the oil pump.

all the 5.0s i've seen had the clip on top. also arp tells you to put it on top distributor side.

i dunno... im not arguing with what you or arp are saying, but just to me (in my own little world) common sense would tell me that if you put it in from the top, and it actually comes out with the dizzy, how are you going to get it seated back in the oil pump? youre gonna have to be very creative with a magnet or take the pan off to see if it is actually seated in the oil pump. hell if i know... im kinda glad you guys are talking about this though, as i was planning on taking my oil pump off tonight.

I know you are not arguing its cool but how I c it is even if the clip is on the bottom of the driveshaft (oil pump side) the clip will not engage anything to keep itself in the oil pump, but if the clip is on top (distributor side) the bottom of the driveshaft will stay in the oil pump while the clip is engaged on the bottom of the driveshaft hole if the distributor is pulled out and the driveshaft wants to come with it. The clip will hit the bottom of the driveshaft hole and pull the top out of the distributor. I found a pic of a FRPP driveshaft and a stocker with the clip still on it. FRPP on the left and stock on the right w/clip. The distributor would go onto the top of the driveshafts (the pointed end).

Ok, i called the ford racing tech line 1-(586)-468-1356 (you can verfiy this if you like) I talked to a dude named bill... bill said " you have to remove the oil pump, and insert the oil pump drive shaft from the bottom of the motor going up. You need to mock the pump up, and adjust the clip to ensure the oil pump driveshaft is fully inserted into the oil pump itself. If you find that your distributor isnt going all the way down, it can be trimmed (the drive shaft) to make it seat properly. If you put the clip on from the top, especially with a new drive shaft and a new distributor, you will more than likely pull the drive shaft out with the distributor, and you will have an extremely difficult time getting the drive shaft back into the oil pump. most people that do it that way end up accidentally dropping the drive shaft into the oil pan, and then call us to see what to do" he also said Ford calls that little clip a "keeper" because its function is to "keep" the oil pump driveshaft from being pulled out of the oil pump.

do what you want with yours Kdub, but honestly, mine will be going in from the bottom.

we are really exploring the hell outta this, arent we? ok, but if you dont have the timing cover off, how would you be able to get the driveshaft back down there... i mean, with a magnet or something? i hate things like this... i should throw my clip away and just weld the damn thing to the oil pump

yeah I did a quick search. I'm not sure if u think that I put the driveshaft in from the top of the motor b/c it shouldn't be. The driveshaft should go in from the bottom with the pan off with the clip on the pointed end of the driveshaft which goes to the distributor I believe...But i know mine is not coming out with the distributor if I pull it out...

i think ill go home tonight, and take some pictures since i have my oil pan off, and timing cover off etc...

Ok, right on, thats what i meant the whole time... i think my wording was retarded.... and my distributor looks like a birthday cake on a pogo stick, but i thought you meant you were dropping the shaft from the top... so that clip would be on the other side of that little line i drew... we were both on the same page then... thats good to know lol

you don't even need that. i didn't have one and i didn't car, i put it in from the top. i just put some silicone in the dizzy end and stick the rod in. then i wipe the excess and install the entire piece. since you have the clip and the pan off. do it the other way
