If I am driving on the highway @ 70 mph, in 5th gear, and my rpm is 2000, what gears do I likely have in my rear end?

This would be in a 94 GT 5.0L. Is this just about stock gears would do?

sounds like 3.27s

It's pretty much the same as my 89 5.0L was, but the 89 seemed alot quicker on takeoff. Must be due to the lighter body.

I hate to tell someone they're wrong, but that calculator is wrong. I had a 3.08 ring and pinion and I revved 2000 RPM at 70 MPH. You have a 3.08. 3.27s were a special option that could be ordered in the 94-95 cars, only with AODE cars. Five-speed cars were not offered with a 3.27.

So that bieng the case, would my 89 5.0 have had 3.08 gears as well?

The calculator comes up with this:
3.08 gears @ 70 mph = 1918 rpm (5th gear)
3.27 gears @ 70 mph = 2037 rpm (5th gear)

I just picked the one that was closest to 2000 rpm, but really, there is not a whole lot of difference between them.

With the stock tach, it's impossible to be that accurate. You might try a different gear and higher RPM to differentiate better between the ratios.

BTW, your fox feels quicker partially because it's lighter, but mostly because of throttle feel. WOT vs WOT, they're both 5.0's . And having raced numerous times both when I owned my Fox body GT and when I owned a stock 94 GT, it's actually a very close race. LX's are a little bit lighter, of course. Pull one of the springs off your throttle cable (at the throttle body), it makes it feel faster...

jack up the rear end....put a mark on your driveshaft...spin a rear wheel ONCE....count how many times the drive shaft spins.....there is your ratio....

I disagree. When i opened up my rear end on my old car, the stock gears were 3.27s. I replaced them with 3.73s and i did the same with my new car too. These too were 3.27s. Maybe i have had two magic stangs. Both are 5-speeds.

Disagree all you want, Ford did not offer a 3.27 gear in a 5-speed car. How do you figure they were a 3.27? How many teeth were on the ring and pinion gears? In a car with T5, and a .68:1 5th gear ratio, the car is going to turn 1920 RPM @ 70 MPH (close enough to 2000), with either a 245/45/17 tire, or the standard GT 225/55/16 tire. It's common knowledge that a 5-speed car has either the standard 2.73 or the optional 3.08:1 ring and pinion. Anything else is nonsense, and you CAN take that to the bank.

I don't quite understand this. If I only spin the tire once, do I need to multiply this by 3 or something to get the end number? For instance, if I turn the tire once, and the driveshaft turns 9 times, which is multiplied by 3 to both numbers, that would make 3:27. But that doen't seem to make sense for a ratio like 3:08

Go out and take a look on your differential cover. There will be a little plate held on by one of the bolts and will give you a gear ratio. For example, mine says 2L73 meaning my car came with 2.73's stock.

Jack the rear of the car up, put a mark on the drive shaft and spin the tire one full revolution. While spinning the tire, count how many times that white mark goes around. If it goes around slightly more than three times, you have a 3.08 gear. If it goes around two and three-quarter times, you have a 2.73 gear. So forth and so on.

According to my calculations, a 245/45/17 tire and a 225/55/16 tire are only 0.06 inches different in overall height, so either tire can be used and the answers should be (pretty much) the same.

Ah ha. That clears it up for me. Thanks. I'll give it a try tomorrow and see what I come up with.

I remember my 2.73's.... 65mph.. 1500 RPM. HAHAHA..

you can look on the pinion gear that i took out and they say 3.27. But hey, that must be code for 3.08 at ford.
