We've been thinking about moving and particularly to Texas, but I told my husband wherever we go has to have more friendly car laws...
How's Texas as far as emissions, inspections, etc???

I think they are about average compared to most non-Californian states. I had to take out my HIDs for inspection though b/c you are required to have low and high-beams.. at least thats what they told me. Not sure how strict they are on emissions - my midpipe is catted.

It's two years for a new car and then every year thereafter. Emissions testing per se is not done on OBD II equipped cars, except for a possible visual inspection to verify you have cats

When you bring it into the state it will have to pass inspection before you will be able to register it. There are many counties in Texas that will not require you to have cats or pass emissions, but none of those are in any of the major metro areas.

Thanks! I could put the stock pipe back on to pass, then just remove it again. Just not sure I want to have to do that every year. Don't know what area he is thinking about, tho.

I have someone here who's going to help me pass, if I am still here in 08, but I am hoping not to be here in 08!

Cops aren't the problem, inspectors are. The Lonestarstangs site is limited to primarily to the San Antonio area.

even before i got a hook up for inspection, i passed just fine at a jiffy lube type place. most places just check your horn and lights and slap the new sticker on the car. i've never had anyone start the car up, pop the hood, look under the car, jack it up, or drive it at an inspection.

Jeez... they go over mine with a fine tooth comb here! Last time I went (2 years late, haha, so my sticker was only gonna be good for 2 months), they said everything was fine, but if I came back the next day, I could have got the sticker for 2 years, so I went back the next day, and they said my gas cap was no good - it was fine the day before! - anyway, they let me pass, but you can see the kind of crap they check here - EVERYTHING.

On OBD II equipped cars they are only reading sensors and don't usually look under under the car, and they never have on mine. They always could though, and probably would on a car brought in from out of state.

I just got mine inspected. As long as your check engine light is not on and doesn't report emissions faults, the inspectors are done. I have never heard of an inspector who went looking for cats. In fact, at one place I asked the inspector if he checks for cats. He asked why. I told him I'd have to go home and put my stock pipes back on. He asked if my CEL was on. I said no. He said that tells me you have everything in working order and told me to pull into the bay for an inspection.

Oh yea, where in TX are you moving to?

They're still going to look more closely at everything on a car brought in from out of state, in most cases.

I have no cats, and Magnapacks...I pass inspection just fine without anyone saying anything. Oh, and it's only $12.50 for me (no emissions county).

Cops, however, have pulled me over for "an absence of mufflers." They asked me, "Where are your mufflers?" I say, "They should be right under the back seat." They stand out there for a bit, I guess to make me wait, and then they say, "I'm going to let you go with a verbal warning, but if I have to pull you over again I am going to give you a ticket for sound ordinance." This has only happened on the Baylor campus though.

I always taunt cops with my exhaust and have yet to get a ticket for it The day is coming soon, though. I promise.

Oh! I also have 10% tint. Out of the 7 or 8 times I've been pulled over (only 2 tickets), not one of them mentioned the tint or the lack of cats.

TEXAS FTW!!!

P.S. If you're worried about a visual inspection, just get some cat shells welded around the pipe. If I had problems with inspection, I was going to do this.

I had to take the tint off my driver & passenter windows to pass here. Looks kinda stupid now with just the quarter windows and rear window tinted. I had 20% when it was there, and it looked great.

I live in Dallas county and they do emmissions testing every time, they stick
the sniffer in the tailpipe and rev the engine to 2500 rpm for a couple of minutes.
