Hey guys, I have a custom red on my car right now. The previous owner had it painted. I have some new body pieces but I'm not sure how I'm going to match the paint. My question is, can an autobody shop match a paint color without using a color code? Or is this impossible? All I have is the small bottle the painter left to use for touchup. I'm getting the whole car repainted eventually, but I want to add some new body pieces in the meantime. Thanks - Andrew

Some body shops have an machine that they place on the car and it reads the pigments in the some how. Not sure exactly how it works, or what its called, But it might be able to match your color.

Probably only a specialty shop right? Are shops with these machines hard to come by?

Not sure exaxtly who would carry them the shop itself or their paint supplier. I have seen one at local shop once when I was picking up my Durango a few years back..

Andrew Im from Mass too, a little south of Worcester. Im going through the same thing as you. Car was a custom blue from the previous owner and I wanna keep it close to that hue. I found a place in Putnam CT that offers computerized paint matching. According to them once theyre done you wont be able to tell the difference.

Im in Webster Mass. Its about 10 minutes south of Worcester on 395. The place I saw advertised is in Putnam CT. About 20 minutes south of Worcester(if you go 65 MPH) exit 97 off of 395. Its called Cargill collision center. I dont have the number off the top of my head but Ill grab it out of the shopper when I go home tonight. Im sure theres others too. Probably some closer to your location. Ive just started looking and Im looking for places that do computerized paint matching so if I come across anymore Ill give you a shout. I was hoping to have my car done for the burnouts in Worcester but that aint gonna happen at this rate...

bring me the car...I do this for a living. I will get it SPOT ON. There is a machine that can get you close but not dead on. The rest is by the naked eye. just to let you know red is the toughest color to match. You could send me a piece of the car(gas flap or something) Ill match it for ya and sens you the formula. By the way I deal in PPG only. good luck.
