Things are different for me in my situation. I spend a good chunk of time in front of a computer, but i also get to do a ton of lab work. I design particle filters used for tooling to make microchips. So after i model the parts up, i get quotes and make them and then assemble the prototypes in my lab and then proceed to test the hell out of them with various tests that keep me occupied but always doing something else. Then i get to train the manufacuring operators on how to make it and tweak the process before it ever gets added to the catalog.

Been there almost a year and I love going to work every day

Yeah I am the hands on type, so if I got out in the shop some I think things would be different. My thing is, they need me in the Engineering department, and I don't have that option. It's design it, and then move to the next job. I mean it pays well, and keeps me busy I guess, I am just more of the either "hands on", or "need to love it" type.

go in every couple of weeks and talk to the manager. tell him what it is you want to do and ask if there is a position available. do that a few times and if you havnt made a pest or an ass of yourself you will be at the top of the list when a position does open up.

My Dad started sweeping floors at a collision shop at 16. Next thing he knew, he was 20-21 and he was pulling frames, doing body work, and painting. He then turned 33 and bought the salvage yard. 17 years later he is still here, and I am 25, and I have been year for 10 years. He really climbed the ladder!! I followed his footsteps and I don't regret it on step of the way.

So I suggest getting into some sort of trade, or business, and stick with it your whole life. This day and age it is hard. Most people don't have careers anymore. They might have a new job every 3-5 years with this nations economy.
