Checked my timing today, and the guy before me had it set at 7 degrees for some reason. I advanced it to 10, then 12, then 14, then 16, but heard no pinging, but went down to 14 just in case.

I also tried at 14, but I heard no pinging at idle. So i took it for a drive, made a WOT run, and still didn't hear anything, although at WOT, all I can hear is my exhaust, which sounded much healthier btw. I'm not exactly sure what pinging sounds like, but I don't think I heard it. So I turned the timing back down to 12, because I don't plan on running anything other than 87 octane.

So, i guess my question is would 14 degrees be too much on 87 octane?

BTW...my car feels a LOT better.

As long as you have no spark knock, you're fine. Don't forget to remove the spout connector as well as you set the timing.....

Yup, did that. Does anyone else run 12 or 14 degrees on 87 octane?

I don't see any h/c/i in your signature. You've got a good chance of running that kind of timing on 87. If not, then just back it down a dgree or two until it's happy.

Must be nice. I just had to back my timing below 10 because of how crappy our gas must be here.

Oh, and the noise you'd be listening for sounds similar to dieseling (the noise you hear old station wagons make when you shut them off and it blubbers for a few seconds afterwards.)

on my stock setup last year i could go to about 18* before it knocked at idle. i always ran it at about 14* with regular gas.
