radar detectors....and car alarms....

I'll take that as a personal attack and leave it at that. I guess I do not understand how to use them because I don't have any experience with them. I see no reason to travel at an excessive speed and I feel that a radar detector is a waste of money. You can throw around theories/facts about radar detectors based upon, what, surveys and tests? Who are those tests conducted by? I just don't use them and that is by personal preference. I'm just relaying information I have been provided by sworn officers of the law.
Don't blame me for knocking on radar detectors since I appear to be in the minority of Mustang drivers. Yeah yeah yeah, Mustangs are powerful and meant to be driven fast. I've heard it over and over. But I feel that we, as drivers, have a personal responsibility to EVERYONE on the road to ensure their safety by how we drive our cars and handle our actions. Radar detectors provide a false sense of security to prevent being caught for an action that is already illegal.
Do I speed? Yes, but it is not excessive and I at least keep up with the flow of traffic.

My boss is a former deputy and we have state patrol, deputies and local police stop by to chat and they all have said the same thing: you're already tagged when the alarm goes off.

Incorrect. If there are people speeding in front of you, when they are shot with radar, the detector will alert you before it's your turn. You may even pickup laser scatter of the guy in front of you on the detector. A smart speeder doesn't lead the pack. That will get you caught. You are supposed to use a "rabbit" or "cop magnet" as I call them. So your boss is only partly correct. My Escort 8500 has alerted me to cops running radar up from far away which made me slow down before I saw them. Without the radar dectector I would have never knew a cop was there or seen him after it was too late.

You can get a ticket for running a red light even if it was yellow, you can also get a ticket for going 1 mile an hour over the speed limit.

I have a V1 and it has definately saved my ass....and i have a Alpine alarm with 2 zone motion/glass sensors/pager/remote start etc...

I also think a good radar is only as good as the user...as UM stated if your gonna lead the pack then everyone behind you will be grateful when you get busted. Common Sense and a good detector can go along way in aiding in your daily commute at slighly elevated speeds.

With Lazer this is some what true, but they must be stopped before they can use it and be close enough so that they can aim the laser at your license plate [or similer flat surface] and not use the lazer on anyone else ahead of you [the detector will pick up the lazer scatter] If you see a car parked on the side of the road, slow down
On the highway I start picking up police radar from about 5 miles.

I have found that they are also useful in calling an officer's

For example: I have been pulled 3 or 4 times and the officer says
"drivers lisense and registration please" ... "you know why I pulled you"?
I reply "no sir, why?"
"you were doing ___ in a ___"
"How do you know how fast I was going? My radar detector never went off"
"You have a radar detector!?"
"Yes sir, is that illegal"
"No, it's not illegal but I know you were speeding"
"I honestly don't think I was, sir"

*goes back to his car for a while*

"here you go, this is a warning ... slow that stang down. You know you were going too fast"
"Yes sir, I may have been ... but I know I wasn't doing ____ in a ____"
"have a good one .. your car is really nice"
"you too, thanks"

Wasn't a personal attack at all. It appears I was right on the money though. Like I stated before, it's a tool.

You stated you didn't understand how a radar detector could save you money, sorry you didn't understand that receiving a ticket costs money. Avoiding a potential ticket saves you money. A radar detector when used CORRECTLY can prevent you from getting a ticket, therefore it saves you money. Pretty simple really.

When the Pigs paint the guy in front of you with radar or even laser, your detector goes off and you slow down before he paints you. Thats how you use your radar detector...of course it won't help if your driving down a road in NO traffic and get lit up comming around a bend, but whatever, I've been saved at least four times. KNOCK ON WOOD.

THEY WORK....get a $60 one at radioshack (thats what I have and it works fine) and it will pay for itself, I promise you.

Radar detectors are not useless but it is possible to overspend. No more than $100 is necessary IMHO.

You can def detect cops shooting other drivers and slow down well before you get nailed.

There are situations where radar detectors will not help such as cresting a hill and getting blasted by the instant on, I hate when that happens but it must be fun for the cops doing it

Yes I agree it is a tool. I know that a ticket costs money but a radar detector, no matter how correctly used, does not guarantee getting no ticket.
I'm just stating that by driving wisely will go a lot further than depending on an electrical unit that can potentially fail.
There will always be those that think radar detectors are something they need, and those that feel it is a waste of money. I'm the latter.
