My 3 year-old son has a X-Mod radio controlled '65 FB. They're not high-end RC cars, but they're OK. It was originally bluish- silver, but I painted it to look more like daddy's.

You'd be surprised! My son and I raced for a few seasons and it nearly bankrupted us!!

I had a couple of the higer end RC cars back in high school. They were the electric ones by Tamaya (sp?) and looked like dune buggies. I would like to try the gas powered ones. Maybe when my younger boys get a little older.

The gas cars are a hoot! Especially the nitro moster trucks...very fun.

I raced a modified class 1/10 electric...blew the doors off of the gas cars. I used to love to line up next to the gas cars in the parking lot for a little drag race. They always thought it was a joke until they ate my shorts

Interesting. I wonder how long before that statement holds true for full sized cars?

I have some old touring cars, an HPI RS4 (the old one with a rear gearbox) and a Tamiya TA02-FF (FWD). I tried the drifting thing with some home meade tires and it was fun for a while, but I got bored.

Back before I was even a teenager I was into the stadium trucks. I raced a Traxxas Hawk in stock class and actually won against a bunch of Losi and Associated trucks with much better equip. I had an off-brand motor, Dynamite and Duramax batteries, no peak charger, a semi-offbrand truck(with bushings, not bearings!), and a basic Futaba radio. Then I stepped up to a Traxxas LS-2, but lost interest in racing.

I also used to have a Traxxas Nitro Hawk, but That was back before nitro was widely accepted. There were no tracks around here that would allow gas R/C. I got rid of it because of the relatively high maintenance. I still have all of the R/C cars except the nitro.

BTW-like any hobby, R/C cars are definitely NOT cheap.

That's exactly what we enjoyed about the hobby...it comes down to driver skill more than anything, so it was that much sweeter when our "used junk" beat the high dollar stuff

Yeah, it's great to do more with less. The second place guy behind me in a final heat said "Good race, I almost got you though!" Uh huh. He was at the other end of the straightaway when I crossed the line because he couldn't keep it on the track. He was sponsored by the local Nissan dealer while I was sponsored by Dad, hehe. My strategy was more of "slow and consistent wins the race" and it seemed to work.

it does already! It's just that the fast electric cars are rather expensive and still mainly prototypes.
