Ran out of gas

Ugh, first of all I feel like an idiot so no laughing.

I ran out of gas, but I didn't know that is what happened. I was driving on the highway and it started sputtering so I broke down at a light. Cop came and everything. I was trying to rev it and it was lean backfiring so bad and I thought I heard something metal like clank around.

Could I have done any damage? What could have happened? It seemed to run fine...

Pop open the hood have someone rev the car slowly progressively increasing the rpms and listen for any unusual sounds and try to pinpoint it. If no sounds chances are the clank may have been detonation in which case you will have to drive the car to see if there is any headgasket or piston damage. Also, check all your spark plugs for signs of damage from detonation. Other than that I cant think of anything else.

The sounds were caused merely to lack of gas. Trust me, I used to run out of gas all the time in my previous mustang(gauge didn't work). I then learned how many mpg I would get and problem solved. Just pump gas in there and it won't start on the first one, but after it does, all is normal.
