Have a few misc. questions (well actually a friend w/ a 93 LX 5.0 has a few ques). When i start the car in the mornings if i dont give it a little gas it'll die repeatedly.. but if i give it gas for like a sec or 2 and then let off it settles into a decent idle until it warms up and then idles perfect. Is that normal? Could it be a dirty MAF? Also on the gauge cluster, the speedo needle bounces around when at low speeds (worst at below 20mph gets better the faster you go). Is there a way to fix this or does he need a new speedo? Thanks in advance

Also is there a factory amp somewhere in the interior of the car?

the speedo gear is probly worn...easy change if it's the small cable gear.

speedo cable is probably worn or binding causing the speedo bounce, idle issue is likely a dirty IAC (idle air control) valve, and the factory amp is located under the dash behind the radio...pull out the radio and look back in there and you will see the amp...you need the speaker wires coming out of that amp in order to wire in an aftermarket head unit

It is most likley a dirty, or slow IAC (Idle Air Controll) solonoid causing you to need to use the gas pedal durring first startup. Common problem with our year fords.

Like Roland said, most likley a worn speedo gear. Take out the speed sensor, the teeth of the plastic gear is probally worn down, easy, cheap fix.

Every mustang ive had that has done that I have been able to fix by running 93 and putting a bottle of lucas injector cleaner in. Also my wife's thunderbird had the same problem until I started putting in a bottle every other fill up. Only done it three times and I got great results. They all used to die sometimes at lights. Havnt had a problem sense.

Courtesy of S&2B's site is the fusebox diagram. Do note that this is likely based upon an '88 GT, so there might be minor differences.

Good luck.

You guys with idle problems could same a lot of time chasing your tails if you would go through the Surging Idle Checklist. Over 50 different people contributed information to it. The first post has all the fixes, and steps through the how to find and fix you idle problems without spending a lot of time and money. I continue to update it as more people post fixes or ask questions. You can post questions to that sticky and have your name and idle problem recognized. The guys with original problems and fixes get their posts added to the main fix.
