I think it matters alot when it comes to picking a vehicle to use.I don't think it matters. They are both small trucks. If one looks better or has features you prefer, go for it.
If you want the "best truck in America," screw the Toyota offerings,. They are a day late and a dollar short. The frames are flexy and weak, the boxes are weak, the whole truck was predicated on the assumption nobody ever overloaded it. We all know that real people put more in their box than the maker ever suggested was wise. Buy something that won't cave in when you eventually do that. And that means Ford, GM, or Dodge/Ram. There's a reason they call Tacomas "Tacos." And it's not just BS or anything to do with immigration.
You'd have to be a serious fool to think a Toyota was the best option. How many Tacoma's have 200K+ miles on them? My friend's Jimmy has 225K, and the engine is running as strong as the day it rolled off the line. This fall we replaced the front diff, the rear axles, bearings, and brakes. You can bet we had a few good long discussions about whether it was worth it, and the conclusion was always "yes."
I don't think there is a functional difference between an S10 and a Ranger pickup. I'd buy a used Dakota with a V8 myself if I was in the market for a light truck. The biggest weakness of the Ford and GM offerings is the lack of a V8, IMHO, but I realize it's not an issue for most people, including myself realistically.
Everybody has a preference, but I'm not sure it's a matter of what you'd be happy with regarding brand as much as what features each comes with that you prefer. And pricing. Buy the best you can afford and forget brand because they are all good trucks.
They build Rangers near me, so a bunch of my neighbors would appreciate it if you thought a new Ranger was the best truck for you. As would I, because what makes my neighbors happy makes me happy. But it's your money and your truck.

If I were purchasing a truck I would choose a Toyota Tundra or
Tacoma in a heart beat.As far as questioning the structural integrity
of these trucks I think that is just malarkey.I never seen one person
ever have a structural issue with these trucks.
I know when it comes time to trade in or sell the Toyota Tundra and
Tacoma have excellent resale value over the first five years of ownership.
They are very gasoline efficient also.What has people sold on Toyota is

I've owned a Toyota and a Honda, and there is nothing there to brag about. I'm not biased, I'm informed. There's a difference. You are biased if you think anyone who doesn't love Toyota is a hater. You believe it's not possible to ignore Toyota marketing, therefore anyone who seems to must be irrational. I say you are irrational if you refuse to entertain the idea that possibly Toyota talks a lot.
Know the difference between reality and marketing. And know that marketers lie to sell things. That's why they are called "commercials" and not "documentaries."
I'm not buying the "Toyota is reliable and dependable" BS they've been shovelling by the ton for the last 20 years. It's marketing BS, means nothing in the real world. What I've actually seen from Toyota is they make cheap cars and trucks that are no better than anyone else's and in many ways are worse.
Buy Toyota if you want, but don't try and tell me I'm "biased" as if my own experience is invalid while your experience is valid. I'm not the one telling people Toyota is perfect and all else is crap. That is irrational.

Back on topic: I've had 3 s10's and one ranger, and from the way it sounds, your perfect ride would be a 2.3L 5spd Ranger. No doubt in my mind.

Thanks. My buddy and I fabbed up the lift one Saturday and it came out very nicely, no death wobble, and if anything rides better than stock, with just a little extra drivetrain vibes. I made it to level out the bodyline, I like an XJ with a little bit of a nose-high stance to it. A 32" tire is what I want, but the 235's A/T's I had laying around were in great shape so I threw em on there, and they actually work rather well, and they look like a 30x9.50 on my 15x8 Soft8's lol.
I added you and D-BOI as friends on JF also.
