I was reading an article on the new Caterham seven replica, it's powered by a ford 2.3L naturally aspirated engine making 300 hp. Then it said it was based on the ranger block found here, with a heavily revised head.

I was like WTF????? How can these guys pull 300 hp from this thing??

Long story short, I forgot the ranger now uses the duratec DOHC....... and actually didn't know it was at 2.3L I thought they were 2.5 still.



For a few minutes I was thinking about a Duratec swap, then I saw what it costs to get one of those 300 (or more) hp engines, like 15k.

Actaully, I wouldn't be surprised at all to learn it is our old 2.3s there were using for that car. They've been making 300hp NA for probably decades on that engine. All you need to do is rev it to 9k. haha. Basically, it takes a ton of compression, a nice head from Essilinger, a cam that goes whommpp, whommp, whommp, and an intake/exhaust manifold to support that power level.

Well, yes I know in full out race trim it'll make really nice power, but this is a street car.

I looked it up on their website, and it is a Duratec, dammit.

Theres a dirt track engine builder about 10 miles from me that pulled 291RWHP from a 2.3 with a cast iron head. I wouldn't believe it either but I was standing at the dyno when it ran.
