Gentlemen, have a 2002 GT with close to 40,000 miles. Original Goodyears are about gone and will have to be replaced. Much as I would like to go with some major exotic tire, the reality is I use this car to commute 75 miles a day and other work related use. I need tires that will last, but still be performance enough to take 140 mph blasts and on-ramp cornering. I did a lot of track time when I was younger and raced Class 2 sedan in SCCA and held an IMSA license. I can make it win.

Using the UTQG ratings as a start it looks like the Yokahama Avid H4S (500 UTQG) and BFG g-force T/A KDWS (400 UTQG) may fit the bill in the $130's at Discount Tire. I don't want to pay $15 less a tire and end up with half the mileage. Any thoughts or experience with these tires, or should I look at something else.

We have the Yokohama AVS ES100's on the wifes car and love them. Very stiff sidewall and good all around traction. Much better than the stock goodyears. $116 bucks a piece for 245/45/17's

I would get the BFGs from those two picks.

you got your stock rubbers to last 40k miles? damn man take that pig sideways.

I would do the BFG's...if you want you could sacrafice some traction for a little better wear time and get Nittos..you certinatly wont hook as hard as you would with BFG's...but it would be good eneough with some suspension mods for the street..then go with slicks for the strip! ;-)...jus my take on the tire situation!

Real World Tires

Look into Michelin XGT Z4 Pilots. Very good ultra performance all weather tire.

Why KDWS's. Do the KDW's wear out too fast? You definately don't need snow traction in Houston. If you got 40K out of the old ZR45's, I'd bet you could ride a KDW for quite a while.

I thought the KDW were quite a bit more than the KDWS, and he was trying to stay in a $130 per tire price range

Those Michelin's are really expensive. This is my work car and I put on 20,000+ miles a year. 99% of it is on the freeway. Gotta strike the balance between mileage and performance and cost. I don't want to go back for new tires for another 2 years. Good air and rotation will put the Goodyears at 40,000 mi.

I recently got Dunlop SP901's. Good tire worth considering IMO.

I say the yoko AVS ES 100's. Pretty good wear rating, great all around traction, and only $125 each!

I have a set of Dunlop SP5000 245/45/ZR17s. They're pretty good, nice grip, very stiff sidewall, and mileage is ok. Around $130 per tire if you shop.

The nitto 555s are a good tire from what everyone tells me that has them, just like road rage said, good price too

aren't they have tread wear rating like 100?
I went with NT-555. I had NT-450 in my old Coooga and MR2, and 84 supra, and i had pretty good luck with em.

WOW, I have never heard of anyone getting 40,000 miles out of the Goodyears, I was only able to get 24,000 and that is with a light foot and lots of highway miles.
You might want to look at an H rated tire versus a Z Rated tire. They tend to have harder long wearing tire compound. They due perform very well but because of the lower speed rating and harder compound do not have the stick of higher rated performance tires. Sounds like you are commuting a lot with your Stang, the H rated might be a good choice. Also suggest you check the Reviews link on this site for more details on different tires..
