It appears that my rear brakes are locking up but only when I apply the brakes while backing up.Then as soon as I drive forward they are unlocked. even if I just pull the emergency brake they will lock up but only while backing up.

I don't think brakes are smart enough to know which direction the wheels are moving. It's possible that your calibers are in need of replacement and there is still drag you don't feel when moving forward.

well mrvax you were on the right track.it was in fact caliper related.Apparently one of the bolts that hold the bracket that the caliper bolts to came loose and fell out.the caliper was getting wedged between the rim.

Whew, darn glad it wasnt anything major.

Jesus. If that isn't major, I don't know what is!

It's not that big of a deal, easy enough fix. I had this happen to me on a trip from Jax to Tallahassee Fl. On the way there the caliper froze and caused one hell of a noise when driving until the pad wore enough to stop it from rubbing against the roter. Talk about embarrassing... After I got home to be on the safe side I replaced all 4 calipers and roters.
