are there any significant difference between a rear end with large bearings versus one with small bearings? are the larger one any stronger at all and/or more favorable compared to the small one? or is there no significant difference other than one the sizes. thanks in advance!

What bearings are you asking about ? Axle bearings, carrier bearings or the pinion bearings?

the large bearings are not that much stronger than the small bearings, but they do have a lower bearing speed to alone with the slightly higher load capacity, which improves the reliability.

ALL 65-73 Mustangs came with small bearing housings.

For some reason I thought the big block Mustangs had large bearing 9s in them.

One difference between the small and large is weight. A small bearing 9 inch weighs less than an 8.8 from a Fox Mustang. The large bearing 9 inch is a LOT heavier.

What makes it so much heavier?

It can only be the bigger, beefier axle tubes. That's the main difference between the small and big bearing housings.

I believe they have HIGHER velocity, actually.
