rear end leaking

ok i think i'm going to have to change the rear end cover gasket to stop a leak, anything special to look out for? also could it leak from the front where the drive shaft goes in? thanks

Don't get the gasket. Get the black rtv gasket maker. And yes there is a pinion seal on the front where the driveshaft goes in.

I just did mine, with the mac support cover it took like 2 1/2 of those bottles of Royal purple.

Through the factory fill plug in the back of the diff, near the driveshaft. Sometimes it's a bitch to get out

I was able to just put the bottles above the mufflers and fill it that way. I guess as long as they are the pointed squeeze bottles that works

I route a clear plastic hose out over the passenger wheel and fill it from there. The hose goes to a funnel and I use a bungee hung from my garage door support beams to hold it up. I fill while standing upright.

I'm one of the few who uses a gasket. I also use RTV on each surface to fill slight imperfections.

You'll need a 3/8" drive to loosen the fill plug (do that before you drain the fluid). Wear mechanics gloves and be careful when you break that fill-plug loose - more than one stanger on here has gashed his hand when the plug lets go.

If you can even get it out. I've seen some where they don't come out at all, while in the car at least. My friend had to fill his from a new rear cover.

A few months later we had the rear out of the car and it still took like a 3ft long breaker bar and a few guys

I hear that Snikt. Another option is to fill the rear from the axle vent on the passenger side tube. I don't like this because you cant be totally sure the level is correct though. But if in a bind, one could toss the specified amount of fluid in and be pretty sure it's close to correct.

Honestly it isn't bad at all. Before you start make sure you can get the fill plug loose. Like hissin said it takes a 3/8 drive. Then just take the cover bolts out. pry the cover off. Don't get the fluid on you. It stinks like ass and doesn't wash off very well. Then clean the gasket surface. Put the rtv on. Attach the cover and bolts and fill. Done. Its simple and easy. The hardest part is getting the fluid back in the housing.

I got one of those little $5 hand pumps that screw on the oil bottle. Works good for the diff and trans.

I agree - don't worry about it. We nitpick little things and make it seem like a real PITA. It's not. But it is nice to hear peoples' war stories in case it keeps someone from duplicating a mistake.

One thing that must be mentioned is that you will need to throw away all the clothing you are wearing at the time of the fluid change.

Once the fluid starts coming out of the rear you will see what I'm talking about b/c it is the nastiest smelling stuff I've ever dealt with on a car. I couldn't wash it off of my skin and the smell didn't wash out of my clothes. I washed all the clothes with the rest of my dirty clothes and then I would randomly put on a shirt that was used in the change.....the smell would hit me like a pile of bricks.....the horror!!!!!!!

Don't forget the friction modifier (if you need it)....

I usually leave the top 3 (or 4) bolts on. Then pry gently to let as much of the fluid out without making a mess.THat way it just seeps out the bottom, rather than pouring out everywhere.

It's not on the top of my list with me not driving the car right now, but if i do anything aside from just fixing the leak i'll be swapping for a 8.8
