Rear End... Locker???

Hey guys! My 89 GT I bought has (I was told) a 3.73 gear in it... but when you let off the clutch, even ride it, the car shimmy's and spins the tires. I know now that my clutch is bad too. I have the paper work that states a 3.73 gear was put in, and that a bearing was replaced.

My question is what is causing that jurking and grabbing. My clutch is stiff as he11 and I was told it had a racing clutch... it'll be a while before I put a new clutch in it (track won't open for a couple months). Is it the clutch grabbing even though it's bad or is there some kind of locker in this car???

BTW, been driving a 5 speed my whole life, this car does a grab and spin unless you can smell the clutch burning. Bad for driveways, parking lots and such- good for coolness factor though...

Okay, I have to clarify a little... My driving skills are good enough to get a 2.0 60 ft in a stock 86GT Vert on radials... I've driven a 5 speed everyday of my life since 16 (27 in March)... but I see what made you think that by the way I wrote this...

This car will GRAB. And it does it hard. You let out on the clutch in 1st and it snags- W E I R D to me LOL.

There are dimples in the roof from where the car was drag raced... so I'm wondering what this guy did to get it to just grab like this or if a simple race clutch will do it since I've never had one- like I said though, I should have elaborated :)
 
I'll ask my friends about that- I'm a moron when it comes to the rear end- I've never bothered building one but my friends have.

It still strikes them as odd... I think the guy jerked a good set of heads off when he sold it. It looked like the intake, TB, and heads were thrown back together. The linkage was hitting the valve cover LOL! I think the guy said it had a "King Cobra" which I've heard of but I never went for that option in any of my cars. I like a light clutch. But it has an adjustable cable at the firewall- makes no difference it still grabs and jerks when letting off no matter how slowly or how the cable is adjusted. Since I've got the paper work on the install (march '05) I'm to lazy and out of time to tear the rear end apart I guess- thought someone else might no offhand. Thanks for the replies guys
 
are both tires spinning leaving two black marks on the road.and could it be a suspension problem causing wheel hop or is it definately slipping and not hopping.could it be someone replaced the traction lok with a spool it might be time to remove the rear end cover and look.

It definately leaves 2 black marks, I've changed the suspension back to stock, taken the 16" wheels with Mick T's off and replaced them with 17x9" cobra r's and radials. The car still grabs... spool? I'll get a friend to check this because it's starting to look like there is something done on that car judging from responses... I've never felt a mustang click/grab/chirp/jerk whatever you call it like this one does... hmm

a spool is a solid link within your rear end which replaces the traction lok which contains clutches which allows it to slip. a spool dosn't slip its a solid link and since it does not contain clutches and does'nt slip they tend to break axles under too much pressure you need to know if you have a spool and if you have 28 or 31 spline axles because if you have a spool and 28 spline axles(alot weaker than 31 spline) you will probably break them before long on the street turning sharp curves, burning out and doing donuts. with a spool you can turn a tight circle on pavement and inside wheel will hop because both tires will turn the same number of rotations know matter what unless axle is broke.
 
if you are lined up straight and not turning and it still does it then it's not a rearend problem unless you got some bad teeth on the ring and pinion....sounds like a racing clutch to me...i've driven cars with racing clutches and it's more of a on/off thing...there is no smooth engagment no matter how hard you try...they are real jumpy and are very hard to drive slow....but if you need something thats gonna hold lots of HP and plant it to the ground they are the only way to go.
