Rear end noise -- what is it? (video)

This happens when clutch pedal is depressed in neutral while pulling into a parking space space (typically a left hand turn). It happened one time while I was driving at a low speed while in gear last night also. You'll have to listen closely because it's very hard to hear it over the engine. In person it sounds like a cable slapping something when you pull it back and let it go along with a rubbing sound similiar to when a front tire rubs the fenderwell when turning.

You can hear it at: 8, 18, 21, 22, 25, 26, 31, 32, 37, 38, 40, 42 seconds

i have the same noise on my 02 GT..i have no clue as to what it is.

I've been told differential clutches and lube the brake lines by some people here. Ford didn't listen when I told them to check that stuff and say that the rear end is fine. It had better not be normal because it's kind of embarassing backing up and hearing clunk-cha-chunk-junk-grrr-ca-chunk. My suspension/chassis squeaks like hell now too.

to me it sounds like clutch chatter.as if it needed some kind of adjusting,but then i heard it come from the rear as you said.so who knows.i took it one time to the dealer and i couldn't replicate the noise.when i got home i looked in the manual to self adjust the clutch and it went away for awhile and thats what got me to think it's a clutch issue.

It seems to coincide with the clutch.

I'm not sure, but I remember with my SVT Contour that I had when it made that noise it was the spider gears...I had to get the clutch, spider gears and the tranny replaced. I hope you don't have to do that! Good luck with it

ahhhh, that sounds bad, take someone from ford for a ride or let them even experience it by driving. that's not ride, our cars have some noised and clunks, but that is weird.

definately doesn't sound good. If you had a front wheel drive car I would say it was a bad CV joint but on a mustang I have no idea. Get it looked at ASAP.

I've had it looked @ twice. I figure I'll get it done for sure when I get back after these 2 weeks of military duty... It's gonna be parked for 2 weeks!

my '03 does it. i hate it. its like the thing has too much slack. mine does it in the rear end and in the tranny. pisses me off.

My rear end was squeaking like a mofo all the time. Got it looked at, it was the bushings on the the rear differential arms were worn (actual part? ). So, i'm getting that fixed this week. Maybe we have the same problem, hope this helps.

I dont know if the 03's at the same as my 98 but it might be worth a try.

Pull up on the clutch pedal with your hand as far as it will go, without forcing it. Then step on the clutch pedal with your foot. If you hear any clicks, repeat a few more times. I have really no idea what that could be. Fairly new to stangs! Hope all is well

My 02' GT does the EXACT same thing.....so I took my local ford garages transmission guy on a ride-a-long to see what he thought it was.

He told me not to worry about it at all......he said that with that particular transmission (00'+ Mustang GTs) it was normal, some cars make the noise before others but that it was nothing more than transmission slack.

He said I could drive it until the car fell apart and I would never experience any problems because of it, just the clunking noice like in your video.

He said they COULD fix it by tightening everything back up, but it would just happen again in a year or so. Also, the fix would not be covered by the warranty because mechanically the transmission works fine, it's just a wear and tear issue.

I wouldn't worry about it.

My '03 gt was doing the same,sounded like the rear diff was coming apart internally .Brought it to the dealer and they put her up on the hoist,and sure enough,the rear diff is done.Only has 15,500 km's .The clutch pack is ...GONE,the center pin that holds everything together...WORN,and one spider gear.....worn!!! .The good news is that it is covered under warranty,and getting repaired as of tomorrow. I guess i ended up with an 8.8 that is a melon .

can some of these symptoms be cured with a new clutch or changing to a steeper gear ratio?

I've tried adjusting the clutch with the pull/push method but it's still there. It also seems to be getting progressivly worse, that's why I think it's not normal. They reindexed the driveshaft and tightened the driveline but it still does it.
