so this morning i'm sitting at a red light, and when it turned green and i pulled out in 1st, this loud "clunk" noise came from the rear of the car :nonono: so i turned the radio off and kept a close ear all day. well, i did quite a bit of driving and didnt hear anything until about an hour ago. i was on a very slight hill, and started pulling out onto the road and the same thing happened again. so once again i listened very closely, and about a half hour later it happened again, fortunately right next to a lime green prelude with altezzas and a trash can muffler. its bad enough that my cars acting up, but to do it in front of some ricers is just plain mean.

now, i have stock gears. the only mods i have are listen in my sig. the only drivetrain mod is my MGW, and ive had that for 3 months, and did the install properly. i highly doubt that is the cause. this only happens when i start moving from a complete stop. the rest of the time the car runs fine. i got under the car on my back and looked for any rubs, anything that might be loose, found nothing. the only possible thing it may be is some things rolling around in the trunk, but ive had that stuff in there for months and ive never heard anything that loud before. ive since taken it out, and im gonna keep listening for this sound. if it never happens again, then look at this as an opportunity for a free tech post. if it turns out to be the stuff in the trunk, i will openly admit to self-ownage, and encourage the mods to change my CT accordingly. i just want some ideas as to what it could be if i do hear it again.

btw: 02 GT, 34.6k, no suspension/drivetrain mods (except MGW shifter) i have an extended warranty (i know, i know) but supposedly the dealer around i got the car from is really good about honoring those, even with slightly modded cars. to the best of my knowledge, the rear axle has never been opened up or worked on. again, the noise was more of a series of clunks than grinding. what could this be?

Sounds like a tanny mount is busted.... I could be wrong but if it's really only doing it when your taking off I'd guess it's that. I kept having something like that happen on my car and couldn't figure out what it was until someone at work started pushing on the tranny and the mount was split in the rubber. It wouldn't do it while driving but only when taking off on me.

To check the tranny mount:

Put the car in gear and see if the shifter moves. It will move a little just from the torque but if the tranny mount is broken you will get alot of movement.

It could be a busted shock...did you notice if you were rolling over any bumps when you heard the sound?

Otherwise...stuff rolling around in the trunk sounds good. :nice:

i hope to God you're right, but it was pretty damn loud. loud enough for me to notice it while i was jamming to metallica. i have an MGW shifter, which is a lot stiffer than the stock unit, but i'll go and check it out later.

first and last time it happened i was on level pavement at a dead stop. second time i was stopped on a slight hill, pulling out onto a level road. if it is a busted shock, that will give me an excuse to get som bilsteins, then i can finally install my h&r sports :D

how long would you recommend driving with a busted tranny mount if that turns out to be the problem? im all about taking care of my car, but money's a little tight right now.

thanks for the help

edit: im gonna take it for a spin real quick. im supposed to be studying for two exams tomorrow morning but damn it, i have a short attention span when it comes to studying

ok, just got back from a spin, and everything went fine until about five minutes ago. i was at a dead stop on a steep incline waiting to pull out. when i did, i definitely heard that same loud noise. this time it was more like a crunching or rubbing noise, and it was right behind my head.

i got the mag light mini out and did a quick recon. i noticed on both the rear struts, there's a rub mark on them where a horizontal strut connects from the frame of the car to (it looks like) the rear axle or brake assembly. (sorry, no pics. the digital cam is mia) i cant remember noticing them there before, but i'm still not convinced this is it. i guess i'll take a paint marker and paint over the rub marks, take it for a spin and check it out as soon as i hear tho noise. man this sucks. if it keeps up, should i just take it to the dealer and hope they honor the warranty? or wait it out until i can afford new shocks/struts and hope thats what it is  wierd noises suck :notnice:
