Rear End!!!!

Hey all i need some help on this one!!
I put 4.10's in the rear this past weekend. It runs alot quicker thank god but now i have alot of noise when i'm at high speeds.
Abuddy of mine told me it could be the back lash. To be honest with you i don't know what that is or how to fix it.

Now my problem is that i had to grind away the pin that holds all the gears together in the diffrential to get the clips on the axles, cause i could not put the pin in with the new ring gear. I had to assemble the diff first then put the ring gear on.

Is there a pin already notched so i may put the diff in first then the pin???
Cause right now when i pull everything apart i am going to have to torch the center of the pin out so i can remove the clips that hold the axles in place.

Also i was wondering if anyone has had this problem and how to fix it???
As of right now I'm a little worried about driving her and don't want to mess anything up.
Any help is apprecciated this is my daily driver and i need my wheels.

Just out of curiosity, what tranny you running?

IIRC you sometimes have to clearance the ends of the axle shafts to get the pin in, I would not have ground the pin.

You might have to consider getting a new shaft and clerancing the ends of the axles.

Also not setting backlash can destroy your gears. Thats why alot of people pay $300 or more to have someone do it because we dont have a dial indicator to check runout. Any manual can give you the specs.

Also Im willing to bet you didnt check the pinion depth? that can lead to broken gears as well. That is the step where you coat the ring gear teeth with white lithium grease and tehn rotate the pinion to see where the contact marks are. If the pinion depth is not set correctly it can cause excessive wear or if too far out can snap a gear tooth off and then your FUBAR'd.

Well she is parked for now i ran her maybe two days so will see what where looking at. I'm running the borg&warner -t-5.
What shaft you talking about the pinnion shaft or the axle shaft...

Plus i came to a conclusion today while at work i wasn't thinking when i took some out of the pin i should of took it out of the side that don't face the axle ends that is where my play is coming from.
I went to a dealer today ofcourse no one around here can help me what is it everyone in wv a retard or what???
Can't seem to get any help anywhere unless it's replys like "you shouldn't change nothing if it aint original"
Gawd what the Heck!!!

But anyways got me a shim kit and will see what happens but i'm going to try my idea i got a scrap stang for this reason.
I knew i would make alot of mistakes!!! :rlaugh:
But htats how you learn and figure out things to makle them work

4.10's will normally whine more at high speed. Above 50?
This is the noise you are talking about?

There is a special cross pin from Ford and Richmond.

If you installed the 4.10's with the shims that came out with them you should be ok.
Specially if they are Ford gears.
The housings are CNC machined and if the pinion depth was alright before it would be ok with the same shims.

I didn't get any shims with the 4.10's!!!
but used the same ones that was with my original gears Will that still be fine?
You wouldn't happen to have the part # would you??
I asked them if there was another pin that i could use and ofcourse got the we don't have nothing like that.

I know they got to have it i saw the pin your talking about in my buddy's haynes manual but was for a 8.8 ford truck rear.

Well the pinion gear shim is under the pinion bearing but the side shims could have been close to your other gears.
I have changed gears before and ended up reusing these but this is lucky if they are the required shims.
As long as you had some play in gears, say10 thou, this would be safe.
Could you grab the ring-gear and rock it up and down and get some play?
Too tight would be a ticking timebomb ready to grenade.

hey G-90 was wonderingif you had a part # for that cross pin went to ford today and they don't know where to look or begin.
So I told them i would try to get the part # for them trying to get it for this weekend. Stuck home with my son and can't even go cruise!!!
Thanks i apprecciate it!!
